P. TIFFAULT, president of the TIFFAULT-KAMPS Mercantile company and for many years a leader in civic and community activities of Marshfield and Wood county, died yesterday afternoon at St. Joseph's hospital following a stroke of apoplexy which he suffered shortly before noon. Mr. TIFFAULT was returning down town yesterday morning from McKinley high school, where he addressed the student body, when he was seized with a headache. He complained at the store of not feeling well and went up to the clinic about 11:30 for treatment. Dr. H. A. Vedder, who diagnosed the cause of death as cerebral hemmorage, administered some medical attention and ordered the patient to rest in bed at the clinic for awhile. His condition about noon became exceedingly precarious and he was taken to St, Joseph's Hospital. At the hospital Dr. Vedder found his blood pressure had climbed to 300, and he removed about a pint of blood in hopes that the high pressure would recede. At about 1:30 Mr. TIFFAULT lapsed into unconsciousness in which state he died, at close to 2 o'clock. The deceased was born near Quebec, Canada, June 29, 1862, of French-Canadian parents. His father, who was a logger and farmer, moved to Collinsville, Connecticut, when Mr. TIFFAULT was a small child, and practically all his life was spent in this country. He came to Marshfield in 1887, and formed a partnership with P. J. KRAUS in a mercantile business. In 1891 Mr. KRAUS sold his interest in the business to W. H. KAMPS. Mr. TIFFAULT has served on the Board of Education for the past ten years. He was the first president of the first board of commerce of Marshfield and the first president of the Marshfield Rotary club having been instrumental in forming a branch of the International Rotary here. He was also a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of the Shrine, an active member of the Eagles Lodge, local aerie, and of the Elks. During the World War he took an active part in conservation projects put before the American people by the administration, served as chairman of the Council Defense for the northern half of Wood County, and took part in all drives for War purposes in Wood County, during the Victory Loan drive acting as chairman for northern Wood County. He also assisted in organization of Company I, Wisconsin National Guard. He served two years as Master of the Masonic Lodge, second Exalted Ruler of the local Elks Lodge, holding that office for two years in succession. He also belonged to the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen while that lodge existed in Marshfield. Mr. TIFFAULT leaves a widow and two adopted daughters, who are Annette, at home, and Leone who is teaching at Avoca, Wis., besides a brother and sister. The brother, Herbert, lives in Balston, New York, and the sister, Ella, now Mrs. George EASTON, residing in New York city.
