My great-grandpa Elmer A. Payne was shown in the 1910 census of Remington, Wood Co. as a "runner on dredge". It is possible I'm misreading this, as the handwriting is hard to read, but I've compared it to other records and it's my best guess. (Runner might be Rover; On Dredge might be O. Dredge.) Another person is shown as a "cook on dredge". Does anyone know what a runner would be, and what the dredge actually was? I do understand that dredges dig up river bottoms. Family lore says that great-grandpa was a lumberjack foreman, however I've not found anything to support that. Deb Gunther
