I do not know how to prove definitively the truth of this story, but the December 2000 issue of what I believe to be the newsletter of the Illinois state headquarters of the American Legion carried the following story: ---------------------- LOST MILITARY RECORDS QUESTIONED It was recently reported in a veterans publication that the Veterans Administration reported discovering 10 million duplicates of the 20th Century Military Records. These records were thought to have been destroyed in a fire. They were told to call the Veterans' Personnel Records, GSA, St. Louis, MO Phone contact was made by this office and was informed that this WAS NOT TRUE and they knew nothing of this nature. We will continue to monitor this situation. ----------------------- I have also received reports from individuals who have attempted to follow up on this report, only to be disappointed when the Personnel Records office told them it was not true.
