Sorry, I inadvertantly posted a bunch of PortageCoWI stuff to the WoodCoWI site. If you aren't checking both sites, you might be missing some of your names. Keep in mind, that WoodCoWI was once a part of PortageCoWI... Also, that people who lived near the borders might have been posted in one or the other, or both counties... I already corrected the errors, so they are in the original county (grin)... Again, sorry. The deceased was a nephew of Mrs HALSTEAD, Frank and George STOCKLEY of this city. Mr HALL was a resident of Stevens Point practically all his life with the exception of the past several years. For a number of months prior to last March he had been employed in Chicago, going west in March and locating in Miles City. The late Mr HALL was born in Altoona, WI, and was 30 years of age. He came to Stevens Point with his parents, Conductor and Mrs William P HALL, when a child. His father died in this city more than 20 years ago. The deceased was employed at various lines of work and for the past few years had resided in several cities, finally going west in an effort to regain his health. Surviving relatives include his mother, Mrs William P HALL, a resident of Miles City, and four sisters as follows: Miss Florence HALL and Mrs Harvey GLOVER, both of Miles City, and Mrs Ralph BEMENT and Mrs Lee KREMBS, both former Stevens Point women, who now reside in Tacoma, WA. Wi Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/298 Surname: EMERY, YONSTAN ------------------------- Peter YONSTAN Death taken from The Marshfield Times, Friday June 9, 1893, Page 1 Assassinated in His Own Home Peter YONSTAN, a young married man of the Town of Saratoga, residing on the ten Mile Creek, was shot down by an unknown assassin while enjoying the comforts of his home last Friday evening, soon after dark. He was sitting at the window playing an accordian when the deadly shot was fired from the outside. Death was almost instantaneous. Officers are trying to find out and apprehend the assassin. Later advices report that CH EMERY has been lodged in jail on suspicion. He was YONSTAN's nearest neighbor and it was alleged that he had made threats against him. A gun with one empty barrel was found in Emery's possession, the wad being identical in size to the one found near the body of YONSTAN. There is a great deal of mystery surrounding the tragedy. YONSTAN was sitting in his house in the evening before an open window when some unknown person fired from the outside killing him instantly. The assassin then fled and escaped in the darkness. No date has yet been set for the examination of EMERY. The sheriff is also working on another clue. YONSTAN was a young man and had not long ago been married. His wife left him some time ago, owing to the treatment she had been subjected to. The wife's father was first arrested on suspicion, but he proved an alibi and was discharged. YONSTAN had had frequent quarrels with his neighbors, and it is supposed that the assassination was the outcome of one of these misunderstandings. His father, Henry METCALFE, was a native of Yorkshire, England, of English ancestry, and his grandfather was one of seven brothers, all of whom have had interesting careers. One branch of the family came to Canada, one went to India and one settled in Cuba. In the Canadian branch the second son is a physician in Thurso, Ontario, the third is a merchant at Smith's Falls in that dominion, and the fourth occupies the old homestead in Canada, with the mother. Mr METCALFE, who name introduces this sketch, came from the East to Wisconsin in the fall of 1867, but did not settle at his present home until 1874, in the meantime being in and out of the county at intervals. From that date his interests have been in the farm, where he has done a great work in bringing it up to its present state of perfection. Meanwhile he has also taken an active interest in town and county affairs, as a member of the County Board and as Town Treasurer. He married Lillian KIPP, who was born November 23, 1857, a daughter of Zaccheus Palmer KIPP, of Centralia, WI. The KIPP family trace their ancestry back to England, and likewise do Mrs METCALFE's mother's ancestry, the NEWCOMBE's. Note: Centralia is now Wisconsin Rapids, Wood Co, WI.
