    1. [WIWOOD] GARDNER, MANNING, LOCKE, BELCHER>1847 Algoma, Mosinee, WI
    2. georgeann
    3. Greetings from Seattle. 1st post to this list. Someone said there are a lot of GARDNER and MANNING families in Wood County, WI. The cities we have in our histories include Algoma, Mosinee, Oshkosh and Wassau. 1) Charles A. GARDNER died abt 1900 in a logging accident. His widow, Effie Pauline (LOCKE) GARDNER removed to Spokane, WA with her young son to live with relatives. We've lost track of all relations in Wisconsin and could use any advice in connecting with them. The MANNING family was in WI by 1847. Someone wrote about a "Freeland GARDNER" who was in WI in the 1850s and I believe we have his name mentioned in some letters. My bet is that the GARDNER family of WI is well documented but I need help figuring out where to search. 2) Oliver Everett MANNING (1788-1879) "...and in 1847 removed to Wisconsin, settling first at Oak Center, where he remained two years, and then went to Algoma, where he entered a quarter section of land and afterwards resided. He m. in 1809, at Woodstock, Ct., Marcia, dau. of John and Percia (Herod) BLANCHARD, b. 1789, Dec. 27, at Woodstock. She d. 1875, Dec. 14; Mr. Manning d. 1879, May 9, both at Algoma....." 3) Alfred Jay LOCKE b. 23 Dec 1834 at Hancock, MA married Pauline MANNING - Manning Book Page 212 1771. SARAH PAULINE, b. 1833, May 2, at Berlin; m. 1857, Oct. 21, Alfred Jay Locke, b. 1834, Dec. 23, at Hancock, Mass.; son of Stephen and Mary (Belcher) Locke. Resided at Oshkosh, Wis., where she d. 1893, Oct. 13. Ch., b. at Algoma, WI: I. Jay LOCKE, b. 1858, Dec. 13; m. Lydia GOODRIDGE; reside at Stanwood, Wash. II. Edna Marcia LOCKE, b. 1861, Mch. 4. III. Wi Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/323 Surname: LAMBERT, LANDRE, LAPORTE ------------------------- Mrs George LANDRE Obit taken from the Centralia Enterprise and Tribune, Saturday, June 13, 1896, Page 1 Mrs George LANDRE (nee Virginia LAMBERT) Another pure, noble woman has passed away and another home is deprived of a fond wife and loving mother. Mrs George LANDRE, after a lingering illness, died at her home in Terry, MT, on Monday, June 8th, at the age of 26 years and 9 months. Mr and Mrs LANDRE and family removed to this state last spring, locating in this city, and from here went to Oconto. The climate proving to be injurious to her health, they returned to Terry last spring, thinking that the dry climate would bring a return of health. The maiden name of the deceased was Virginia LAMBERT, being a daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry LAMBERT, of this city. She was born in this city Sep 8, 1869, where she received her education. On April 8, 1887, she was married to Mr George LANDRE, and two days thereafter removed to Terry, MT, where they lived until their return here. Three children, all boys, have been born to them, and are thus left without a loving mother's watchful care. Besides a husband and three little ones, she leaves a father and mother, three sisters and one brother to mourn her loss--all that is left of a family of ten children. The sisters are Mrs J LAPORTE, of Rhinelander, Elida and Amanda LAMBERT, of this city, and a brother, Emile A LAMBERT, also of this city. Joan M. 3. I don't know whether this is of any value to you, but I was born and raised in Wausau/Marathon, in Marathon County. It seems to me I remember the name Rondeau, in the area and I think it might have been in Mosinee, Marathon Co, WI My suggestion is to try the Marathon Co. 3. Posted on: Wood Co. Wi Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/320 Surname: ANDREW, CANNING, FARMER, RABLIN ------------------------- John ANDREW Obit taken from the Wood County Reporter, Volume 43, Number 22, Thursday, 17 May 1900, Page 1 John ANDREW, 1835-1900 At his home in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, May 15, 1900, occurred the death of John ANDREW, in the 64th year of his age. The immediate cause of death was congestion of the lungs and for the past three weeks he had been sick in bed, and little hope was entertained for his recovery, due to the general breaking down in his health and strength for the past year. He was born in OH, Nov 18, 1835. When he was a year old his parents removed to IN where he resided 18 years. He came to Elk Grove, WI, when he was 19 years old and the following year, he married Miss Jane RABLIN. They removed to Grand Rapids in 1858 where they have since resided. In the early days, Mr ANDREW follwoed the prevailing occupation in this section of logging and lumbering, but of late years he has devoted his attention to the cultivation of cranberries, making quite a success of that business. He leaves a wife and three children, one son, Ernest, who resides in this city, and two daughters, Mrs T B FARMER of Minneapolis and Mrs C J CANNING of Webster, SD. Mr ANDREW belonged to that stock of American citizens whose sterling worth and Hardy manhood will be admired as long as this country has a history. They peopled a wilderness and overcame the obstacles always to be encountered in a new country. Their joys were Arcadian and their friendships more sincere and hospitable than is possible in a thickly populated country and a busy, crowding, commercial age like the present one. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church this afternoon. The funeral took place from the Catholic church in this city Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev VanROOSMAELEN. The death of Mr BURNS removes another of the old-time and highly respected citizens of this community. Born in Ireland in 1827, he came to this county in 1847 and settled for a short time in MA, but in 1849 he was seized, like many others with the western fever, and came on to WI, locating the same year at Grand Rapids, where he has since made his home and reared his family. He was married October 22, 1849, to Johanna REGAN and if he had lived another year, they would have enjoyed a half century of married life. He had been in poor health for the past year, but the immediate cause of his death was blood poisoning. He accidentally ran the tines of a pitch fork into his foot May 3rd, and the injury developed into blood poisoning, his last illness being very painful. The children had all married and left home. Those now living are Mrs W C SHEPHARD, Batavia, IL, R E BURNS, Minneapolis, MN, A H BURNS and B F BURNS, Kalispell, MT, and W H BURNS, Green Bay, WI. Wi Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/317 Surname: BAINE, BARTLETT, McMURTRY ------------------------- Merton B "Bart" BARTLETT Obit taken from the Pittsville Record, Volume 91 Number 39, Thursday October 5, 2000, Page 7 Merton B BARTLETT, 1913-2000 Merton B BARTLETT, 87, of Downer's Grove IL, died on Sep 21, 2000 in the hospital where he had been admitted for pneumonia. Services were held at Peterson Funeral Home, Postewait Village Chapel in Chicago on Sep 24. Bart, as his friends called him, was born in Park Falls, MN on April 2, 1913 to Elsie BAINE and Melborn BARTLETT. Bart travelled between WI and IL for a number of years. His occupations varied from farming in the Town of Hiles, Wood County to working on electrical jobs and furnaces in IL. Bart's best friend in the whole world was Helene Jay McMURTRY who passed away Jul 10, 1996. Together they had a summer home in Pittsville where they spent many enjoyable days in the great outdoors. Bart and Jay enjoyed the wildlife and wanted to have a refuge for geese and deer to come and feed without fear. The seasonal highlight was for the fine feathered friends to come and land on the pond, then swim to shore, and eat the clover and tasty morsels that had been planted there. For the past few years, Bart was blessed with two lovely caretakers in IL. Rachael and Laura provided Bart with 24 hour care in an apartment building in Downer's Grove. Bart had suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed in 1998, thus needed special care yet wished to remain in private care versus a nursing home. His wishes were granted. On Sep 24, 2000, Bart was laid to rest in the Oakridge Mausoleum.
