Posted on: Wood Co WI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/460 Surname: BREENE, BURROUGHS, HERRICK, HUBER, THOMPSON ------------------------- Peter HUBER Obit printed in the Adams County Press, Saturday Oct 19, 1907, Page 1, apparently copied from the Nekoosa Times Peter HUBER, an old resident of Nekoosa, died at Berthoud, CO, last Tuesday, this sad information having been received here yesterday afternoon in a telegram from Mrs C P THOMPSON of Berthoud, to H E HERRICK, of this city. The message was dated October 8, but did not reach here until the afternoon of the following day, having been delayed in transmission, probably because of the telegrapher's strike. The message stated that the remains would be shipped from Berthoud on Wednesday. About a year ago, Mr HUBER was taken down with an attack of bronchitis which developed into pneumonia from which he partially recovered. On Feb 5 he left for CO, accompanied by his brother, Albert HUBER, to seek health in that climate, but his lungs had been affected beyond recovery and discouraging reports concerning his condition prompted Mrs HUBER to go out to see her suffering husband. Leaving the store in charge of Miss Mabel BURROUGHS and the home and children in the care of Mr HUBER's sister, Miss Emma HUBER, Mrs HUBER left July 10th and remained with her husband up to the time of his death. The late Peter HUBER came to Nekoosa in the fall of 1893, soon after his marriage to Miss Mary BREENE at Adams Center, following his trade as mason to a certain extent. In the spring of 1894 he put up a little building on the site of the present HUBER Cash Store, his first stock of goods being confectionary. As he prospered he enlarged his building and added new lines to his stock. Deceased leaves a widow and four children--Leo, Lizzie, Mark and Lawrence. He was a member of the Independent Order of Forrester's and the Equitable Fraternal Union, in which he carried life insurance policies of $1,000 each. It is not definitely known whether interment will be made here or at Marshfield, but it is probable that the funeral will be held here on Saturday or Sunday morning. Posted on: Wood Co WI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/458 Surname: ABRAHAMSEN, THOMPSON, ZENIER ------------------------- Hon Lewis THOMPSON printed in the Wood County Reporter, June 18, 1891, Page 1 The funeral service of Hon Lewis THOMPSON, who died at his home in Buxton, Dakota, last Friday, was held at the Lutheran church of Buxton Sabbath afternoon, Rev PHILLIPS of Cummings and Rev OFTENDAHL of Buxton officiating. Services were conducted in both the Scandinavian and English languages. The funeral was probably the largest ever held in Traill County, about one thousand persons being in attendance. The Odd Fellows fraternity, of which the deceased was long an honored member, took part in the services, the lodges of Grand Forks, Hillsboro, Caledonia, Mayville, Northwood and Hatton sending delegations, about one hundred members in all. Mr THOMPSON was born at Hardanger Norway May 30th, 1837, and came to the United States in 1853 and settled first in Beloit, Wisconsin, from whence he moved to Buxton in 1878 where he owned and operated a farm. He has held several public positions in Buxton since his arrival there, has been postmaster for four years, been chairman of the Traill Co Republican Committee, and last fall was elected representative to the State Legislature. Mr THOMPSON was a brother-in-law of A and S J ABRAHAMSEN of this city, and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the Red River Valley and the entire state. In his death the community and state sustain a profound loss. Mr THOMPSON's death was preced by that of his wife by only about two weeks, so that his family of four children, ages 3 to 8 years old, are left to the care of relatives. It will be remembered that Mr THOMPSON came to Grand Rapids in the year 1868, and was married to Miss Helen ZENIER Nov 6th, 1870. His wife died in March, 1872. One child was born of their union, a boy, who died in his infancy. Mr THOMPSON was initiated into the mysteries of Odd Fellowship in this city in 1874 and remained a member of this lodge until he was permanently located in Buxton, Dakota, when he joined by card, and has ever since been a caring, working member. He was a man of sterling qualities and highly respected by everyone here who enjoyed his acquaintance. NOTE: Apparently portions of the above copied from the Grand Forks Herald. Joan M. The Free Masons, of which order the deceased was a long and honored member, took charge and conducted the exercises in the usual ritual service. Mr EMMONS held many important positions of trust both in the lodge and the community in which he lived. He was a man who made lasting friends and bitter enemies, but it is a pleasure to note that his enemies were few and his friends numerous. A large number of his old time friends followed his remains to their last resting place and deposited them with that care and brotherly love that is always shown among Masons. May peace and everlasting happiness be his portion is the sincere desire of his brethren. Joan M.
