Hi. Saw your message on the Wood County site. Good hunting.
Hi! I am in the process of revamping the WoodCoWI pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood and to my surprise found that the surname pages were not connected: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/surname/ Please check them out and update your information... If your surname is NOT there or if it needs updating, please send me the information as follows: Surname Given Name Your name and email / home page URL Migration pattern with dates Migration means you put where you first find them (prior to coming to WoodCoWI) and if they left WoodCoWI, put where they went to if you know... A good example is DesBOUILLON 1891 Plevna, RenoCoKS> 1900 Necedah, JuneauCoWI> After 1916 Dexterville, WoodCoWI Surnames must have at one time lived in WoodCoWI. Do not put people down if they did not live in this county. Also, list a given name as well - only the old listings will be without a given name until I get the updates. Thanks. I just joined the list today. I have lots of questions and a fair amount of data. My main surnames in this area are listed in the subject. Most immediately I have the following wonderings: This week I went to Wis. Rapids to look at my ancestor's stomping grounds. (I live in Glendale WI, near Milwaukee.) I knew my 2g-uncle Roland Silas "Todd" Payne had been the chief of police for 22 years prior to his death in 1939. However, I was astonished to learn that he died in the line of duty. 2 17-year old young men, one surnamed Noel, were being transported back to the Rapids after being captured in Indiana for car theft. They overpowered Chief Payne, and his asst. chief, took them captive; Payne had a heart attack, the teens refused to get treatment, and Payne died. I saw a snip in a history book that said that Mr. Noel later escaped from prison, and was recaptured in 1945. Does anyone know the rest of the story about these young men's court trials and later lives? And: Did they ever figure out how the teens got a gun, thereby overpowering the police? Second, I understand that my Payne relatives were buried from the "M.E. Church", and the Careys were buried from the "Catholic Church", all in the earliest part of 1900s. What were those churches' full names? Third: Chief Payne had a daughter, Lola Payne Neumann, who served as Police Desk Sergeant. She is buried alone in Forest Hill. The caretaker said her husband was probably Leo Neumann, who apparently remarried. Were there any children by those marriages? Any further data on Leo? (and don't get me started on the "Chief Payne" funnies... I have a whole list of real Payne names that sound even funnier...) Thanks! Deb Gunther

Posted on: Wood Co WI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/10540 Surname: KUEHL ------------------------- Fred KUEHL Obit printed in the Marshfield News Sep 3, 1896 Fred KUEHL Sr Found Dead - The end brought about by heart trouble - The Coroners Inquest Laying in the old ice house at the rear end of lot No 5, block 106, known as the JOHNSON place and owned by the Cream City Brewing company, with his face covered in blood, which had flowed from his nose and mouth from an internal hemorage, Frederick KUEHL Sr, was found cold and rigid in death early Friday morning. KUEHL had a home and family in the 4th ward, but had been drinking heavily of late and had evidently gone into the stable to sleep rather than go to his home. The body was first seen by Fred LEIBELT who at five o'clock passed the place on his way for water. Chancing to glance in the appertare opening upon Fifth Street he swa someone stretched out on the bar within the building, but believing it to be someone sleeping off a debauch, he paid no further attention and went about his domestic affairs. It was not until about a quarter past eight that a boy came running to Mr LEIBELT and told him that there was a dead man within the old ice house, that he again thought of the matter. He went in at once and was startled to find the information to be true. KUEHL, who in life he had only known by sight, was laying flat upon his back, his arms crossed upon his breast and his hat resting on his breast close to the face. He at once notified the authorities and Judge HIRTH immediately proceeded to impanel a jury and hold an inqust. The jury composed of Mesers BUDGE,BEATTIE, SHEERIN, UPHAM, VEDDER and WARSINSKI viewd first the body as it lay in the ice hour and then adjourned to George UPHAM's undertaking rooms, whither the body was removed and carefully examined for any marks of violence. None were discovered and the position in which KUEHL was found in itself indicated that the end had come without a struggle. Death had probably made its grim visit in the still hours of the night as the old man slept, for rigor mortis had set in and the body and limgs were stiffened and unyielding. Having satisfied themselves that the death had not been one of violence, the jury proceeded to take such other evidence as could be obtained. Dr BUDGE being sworn, testified that on or about the 18th of August, KUEHL cam to him in Horn's drug store and wanted some antidote for the liquor habit and something to quiet his nerves, stating that he had trouble with his heart, especially when he tried to quit drinking, being trouble at times to such an extent that he found it difficult to get around. The doctor prescribed for him and he was to have reported when medicine was gone, but the doctor had not seen him since that day to speak with him. The jury then returned to Judge HIRTH's rooms, where after due deliberations a unanimous verdict was returned, the vital part of which runs as follows: "We, the jurors, do say that, in accordance with the evidence connected with this case, said Fred KUEHL came to his death by excessive use of alcohol, affecting the heart in such a manner as to produce paralysis of heart failure. KUEHL was a man of about 55 years of age. He had for several years been employed in various planing mills hereabouts, being at one time an employe of the Upham Manufacturing Co and also for several years of the McMillan mills, as filer. For the past year of so he has not worked much, only being employed occasionally at odd jobs, and has been drinking heavily, being as he stated unable to quit. He leaves a wife and three children, only one of whom is at present living in Marshfield. The remains were taken to Theresa, Saturday, for internment.
