Walter Ross married Jennie Ross (yes, she's listed with Ross as her sunmame before they married) Jan 8, 1862 according to Winnebago County marriage records. Warning: there was another Walter Ross, marrying in 1860, and an Eleanor (Ross) Sherman who married Isaac Norstrandt July 2 1862. Isaac served in the Civil War and died in 1866. He is buried next to your Ross family, so there may be a connection.
