    1. [WIWinneb] Church in Clayton
    2. Hi, I was at the Clayton/Mikesville cemetery today, and noticed a small white church across the street. It appears to be on somebody's private property now, but I was wondering if it was in fact a church at one time. What was it called, and would there be records anywhere. Thanks, Bobbi

    3. I asked Peter Christianson from the Winchester Area Historical Society (PO Box 84, Larsen, WI 54947) about this. He read some information to me from the book "History Of The Town Of Clayton". He also mentioned the society has a 70-80 page Mikesville history book, apparently written by Hazel Breaker (now deceased), who ran the Mikesville store south of the cemetery. That church is a 1/3 scale copy of one that used to stand by the cemetery, built within the past 5-6 years by Sue Rubik. She just put on the steeple. The original church was torn down in the early 1900's, with the lumber used to build cabins. It was a German Methodist Evangelical church. The church copy has no records, and no services held there, that Peter knows of. The original church records may have gone to a church on Highway 45 and Highway 150. That was moved to what became the Stop and Go Tavern, which burned down. The problem with the old country churches was that when cars came, the people could drive farther to church. The location of the records of the original church is not known. Typically, the records of defunct churches were passed around. It would be a good research project to trace the Methodist records in the county. Lutheran records have been sent to a central repository in northwest Illinois, according to the pastor of the Lutheran church in Winchester. WAHS has a nice historical newsletter which I subscribe to.
