Hello list, For several years I have made no progress on my gg-grandmother, Caroline Ehrenfred, wife of Michael Leu of Knox County, Illinois. Recently I found in my grandmother's things an old photo of a couple from Hinderman Studio of Oshkosh, WI. The couple appears to be 50 to 60 years old, it is hard to say for certain. On the back is written the following four lines: Aunt Barabra Hinderman, Oshkosh, Wis. Uncle Joseph Grandma Leu's sister The very last line is in my grandmother's handwriting and Caroline Ehrenfried Leu was her grandmother. Therefore the lady in the photo must have been Barabra (Barbara) Ehrenfried, sister of Caroline, and Joseph was Caroline's husband. Caroline was born 22 June 1836 in Württemberg, Germany, so Barbara was likely born in the same place about the same time. If anyone on this list can provide any help or suggestion on how to proceed in determining the identity of Joseph and Barbara, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks, Bob
Robert, A little bit to go by....I found a B.H. Hinderman in the 1900 Census living in Omro Township, Winnebago Co, WI and he lists his occupation as Photographer. This gives you an approximate time as to when he ran his business giving the phota an approximate time frame too In the 1900 Census I found a Joseph Hohler who is 52 yrs old and is widowed and residing in the town of Oshkosh. He has a son living with him named Peter J., 14 yrs old. Joseph's parents were born in Germany. In 1870 I found these Joseph's with a search of those only in their 30's: 1. Joseph Burkhart aged 35 yrs born in Bavaria married to a Barbara aged 47 yrs born in Bavaria in the town of Neenah, Winnebago Co, WI 2. Joseph Calman aged 36 yrs born in NJ married to a Barbara aged 39 yrs born in Bavaria in Menasha Village, Winnebago Co, WI This gives a couple of names to work with anyway. to me, the photo places her/them in the oshkosh area... (consider up to 30 miles away by horse (a 2 hour distance) and one or two stations away by rail) which means churches, newspapers, obits, cemeteries, participation in local clubs and church groups.... narrowing down where they lived... in town or in country is important because it narrows the church... LAND records help in that.... mortgagor/ee records help to, because seldom do people buy land outright or are able to hold it year after year without some kind of mortgage to get tax money.... was there a city directory? check the public library, historical society for online stuff as well as their FOLDER collections that arent on line.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Pumfrey To: WIWINNEB-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 5:48 AM Subject: [WIWinneb] longshot request -- Joseph _______? and Barbara Ehrenfried Hello list, For several years I have made no progress on my gg-grandmother, Caroline Ehrenfred, wife of Michael Leu of Knox County, Illinois. Robert, In 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 Census's Benjamin Hinderman is living in Omro, Winnebago Co, WI (Division St) and has Photography Studio/Gallery listed as his occupation. This is all we know about the picture for sure. What we don't know if the Hinderman Studio operated out of Omro or Oshkosh or maybe both. We can speculate that maybe your Joseph & Caroline might have visited Omro for a family gathering such as a reunion, wedding, etc and decided upon getting a picture taken while there? Or maybe the family gathering was indeed in Oshkosh and the photographer traveled to them? We don't know when BH Hinderman started his studio but it was indeed in operation from 1900 - 1930. We don't have a census for 1890 available to narrow down that decade and the 1880 Census isn't pertainable as Benjamin H. Hinderman is only 9 yrs at this time. The only Michael Leu/Lue's I found in any early census readings were married to a Mary, Susan, and a Lucy. None of the census's show this family name in Knox Co, IL. It did appear regularily in IA and OH though.
