for those that like to check out the archives )like you know who) and find that loooooooonnnnngggggg line without a line wrap on all those very posts that YOU are interested in, you will be pleasantly surprised that it has had some rootsweb magic done on it.... viola! line wrap! (but if you do find one of those long ones, copy and paste it with the headers and send along to the help desk - you know that is found on the rootsweb.com home page.... (there might be some stragglers, out there for unique reasons....) and those poor folks that have common surnames or names that have several variant mailing lists, you owe it to yourself to check out the Mailing Lists Index because there has been a very nice change.... for example, you can click on surname SMITH and when you get to that page where you would be able to subscribe to Smith, you will find another secondary table of contents with hot links for all the lists where SMITH might occur.... so you would see all of these [AUS-SMITH-LOST] [George-Sterling-Smith] [NIMROD-SMITH] [SMITH] [SMITH-AL] [SMITH-AR] [SMITH-AUS] [SMITH-CA] [SMITH-CANADA] [SMITH-CT] [SMITH-DAVID] [SMITH-DE] [SMITH-ENG-LANCASHIRE] [SMITH-FREEDMEN] [SMITH-GA] [SMITH-HANTS-UK] [SMITH-ID] [SMITH-IL] [SMITH-IN] [SMITH-KS] [SMITH-KY] [SMITH-MD] [SMITH-MISSOURI] [SMITH-MN] [SMITH-MO] [SMITH-MS] [SMITH-NC] [SMITH-NEW-ENGLAND] [SMITH-NJ] [SMITH-NYC] [SMITH-OK] [SMITH-PA] [SMITH-SC] [SMITH-SCOTTISH] [SMITH-SWITZ] [SMITH-TN] [SMITH-TX] [SMITH-UK] [SMITH-VA] [SMITH-WI] [SMITH-WV] and then be able to click on that or scroll down the page to get to the subscribe links.... this only is available so far for SURNAMES not locales... and i for one, am going to overload the INDEX today, checking the new presentation for all my surnames..... might just find myself a new list....

Am researching a Henry Bitters family who lived on a dairy farm near Omro, Winnebago, Wisconsin in 1920 and 1930 census'. The 1930 census showed Henry was 61, wife Catherine, son Johannes and daughter Rosa. Can anyone tell what year Henry or Johannes died? Catherine's maiden name was SCHLETEWITZ/SCHLEDWEWITZ. The 1920 census showed that Henry and Katherine had Paulina, John, August, Mary and Rose. They lived in Michigan prior to living in Wisconsin. Any help would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Marilyn Bitters Scott

John Griswold was a citizen of this town. He enlisted the 20th of Aug. 1864, in the Navy, and was designed for the Mississippi Squadron. From the receiving ship he was transferred to the Black Hawk and from thence to the Iron clad Osage, at that time laying at Helena. From the Mississippi Squadron he was transferred to the Gulf Blockading Squadron and took part in the fight at Mobile, March 29th; where he was blown up, without injury. On the 12th of April he was again blown up, badly wounded and put into the hospital at Mobile. As soon as he was able he was taken to New Orleans where he served the remaining time of his enlistment, started home but sickened and died entirely alone - the people with whom he stopped being from home at Cairo, Ill. His friends, learning he was sick, sent for him, but being dead and buried before the messenger arrived at Cairo; he did not bring the body home. Unwilling that his remains should rest so far from home, his wife started, alone, for them. She arrive at Cairo in the night, spent the next day in learning where her husband’s remains were lain and in trying, in vain, to secure the assistance of white people; hired some negroes to assist her, and after wading mud about ten miles, and overcoming other obstacles, succeeded in exhuming the body and placing it in a metalic coffin, ready to start home the next morning. The funeral ceremonies were performed Tuesday, Nov. 1st.
