I did an online search and found some helpful info. My g-aunt, ABBIE HAMILTON COVEY (d.1936), resided at the Winn. Co. Farm just prior to her death. My research indicates this was a "poor farm". She was at least 70 and from the Co. Farm was taken to Elgin State Hospital where she died (apparently a mental institution) and was buried in "Local Cemetery." Don't know if "Local" meant she was buried at this Co. farm site or another local cemetery.There is a Winnebago Co. Farm Cemetery near the Co. Farm site .... no names on grave sites, only numbers. Address of Co. Farm Cemetery is "off 4400 North Main Street, Rockford, IL behind the present River Bluff Nursing Home." A website I found states that there is "a small book of reocrds" for the Co. Warren L. Wood. Warren L. Wood, 83, formerly of 834 Bowen St., died today at 4:40 a.m. at Oshkosh Care Center. He was born in Oshkosh on Oct. 12, 1892, son of Delford and Olive Wood, and was married here to Margretta Davies on Oct. 22, 1918. Mr. Wood had been a postal mail carrier until 1954, and then had been employed at First Wisconsin National Bank. He served with the Army during World War I. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Cook-Fuller Post 70 of American Legion and Local 173 of American Association of Letter Carriers. Surviving are his widow; two sons, Dale Wood, Oshkosh, and Lynn Wood, Neenah; four brothers, Calvin and Walter Wood, Oshkosh, Howard Wood, Van Dyne, and Robert Wood, Neenah; four sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Esther) Rhyner, Mrs. Lester (Helen) Ross, Oshkosh, Mrs. Robert (Marion) Nelson, Chicago, and Mrs. Florence Johnson, San Altos, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Seefeld Church Avenue Chapel, with the Rev. Paul R. Martin, of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Church Avenue Chapel from Friday noon until the hour of services. A memorial has been established.

They are noted on the 1860 & 1870 WISC - Winnebago County Census. Nicholas & Johanna Opp were married in Brown County, Black-Wolf area, WI in Aug 9, 1872 and I also have found some information that they were later divorced on 6-14-1882 in Oshkosh, WI. They would be my 2nd great-grandparents. Johanna's parents are noted as being Michel and Fredericke Wirth or Witt. Their last name used to be Count Von Oppen. They owned a Castle. Peter Opp brought his entire family to America, just before the eldest son, John George was old enough to be drafted into the German army. The family came to America in a sailing ship, the Owego, requiring 27 days to cross the Atlantic from Havre to the port of Castle Garden, NY, 27 April 1857. In the book "German's to America, Emigrate Passenger Lists" page 455, Peter Opp and his family were found. Ship: Owego From: Havre To: New York Arrived: 23 April 1857 Opp, Peter--49 y/o Agnes--47 y/o ( maiden name was Agnes Meyer) George--19 y/o Catherine--17 y/o Johan--13 y/o (John Opp, born Sep 9, 1843-died Feb 3, 1931) Nicolas--7 y/o A letter received from Shellie Boots, written by Ethel Roper noted that Peter Opp's children were all born in Heddeshiem, Germany. The book lists them from the County "Hesse" in Germany and village unknown. All the passengers were listed as village unknown. Germans to America, Vol. 11 . . Apr 1857 - Nov 1857 Peter's son, John Opp, married Lydia Ann or Lidiana Opp born on Nov 24, 1845 in Pennsylvania. She was the daugher of Henry and Lovina Opp, Pennsylvania. It's noted that John and Lydia were 2nd cousins. Do you have any listings that could help me locate more information about Peter Opp and his family? Thanks. Linda Johnson

I was thrilled to get to read that letter! The first thing that immediately struck me is when I read about the town on LeRoy. When I first started my research I found Polly Warner, in LeRoy. There were a couple other Warners also. Polly Warner is Hial Cady's wife. This Polly had many people living with her of all ages. Maybe the Daniel Cady Darrow is a descendant of David Darrow and Tryphena Cady. Perhaps if we exchange a bit more information we might find something to help connect. Feel free to email me off list. His wife was Isabella Murray 1816-Dec 21, 1894. Their children include Annabella 1842-1906 (m. J.A. Chamberlain); Seymour Finley 1844- March 1894, who served in Co. I of the 21st Wisconsin; Mary Hope 1845-1872 (named for Isabella's sister); and David Murray May 1848-July 1912 (named for Isabella's father). Their farm was about 1.5 miles northeast from Hial Cady's. If you use mapqust or mapblast, you can still find Darrow Road west of Neenah. It is part of a small subdivision along with Murray Road and Balfour Road (Isabella's sister Grace married the Balfour). If you printed the entire page of 1870 census for Julius and Sarah Morey, you will find Isabella Darrow and her family two dwellings above them. When most of the Murray family came out from Genesee County NY in the fall of 1847, son Duncan wrote a letter back to Uncle George and Aunt Jane. I have a photocopy. They stayed with the Cadys while thier cabin was being built. Duncan writes as if Uncle George and all knew who he meant by Cady. "Oshcosh is ten miles from Cady’s. So the next morning Sept 25th I started off on foot Mary & Eliza walked 6 milds with me & stoped at a Mr. Brooks & took diner. I got to Cadys a little after dinner & started James off with Cadys waggon for the rest of them." "I will commence at Oshcosh it is a little village situated on the lake at the couth of the Wolf River which is a beautiful stream nearly equal to the Hudson at Albany . You go nearly north to go to Cadys. The road is very good; it is openings along the road with very little timber so the country does not look as new as it realy is. There is more timber as you go toward Cadys; the soil clay mixed with gravel or sand ! ..." "All things considered Cady had the best situation as the lower end of his place being timber and the upper part being openings." "we will build one something like Cadys 25 by 15 feet it makes a very comfortable house. We live with Cadies have our own vitcals and things." The Murray group was father, mother, William, Duncan, David jr, Eliza and Mary--7 of them! Daniel and Isabella Darrow were already there, as were Grace and James Balfour. SO WHY STAY WITH THE CADYS, even if their cabin was largest?? There must be a connection! These folks were from Town of Pavilion, south of LeRoy in eastern Genesee County; not exactly next door to Steuben County. I have no further clues.

If any one knows Merrit Campbell in Neenah, WI at 920-725-5532 would you please call him and tell him if the originaly owner of the pictures of Ellen Francis Leighton are not claimed I would like them? She is the sister of my great great grandmother Ann Wass Leighton (Waite) Holden who is buried in the Omro Cemetery, along with many others in the family. I will be mailing a letter to him tomorrow. The Omro fire department came to help. The Oshkosh Fire Dept. put an engine on a rail car and sent it out, but by that time it was not needed. There is only a small mention in the book Winneconne, History's Crossing Place. There are no surviving Winneconne newspapers from that time period, but the Omro and Oshkosh newspapers covered the story.

Having grown up in Winnebago county, I would like to learn more about this fire, but I don't find anything on the web about it. Does anybody have any information about this fire? I am interested to hear what people have to say about this. Did anybody die in this fire? Bobbi

"Under the pastorate of Elder Keever and the Waupun Quarterly Meeting of the Free Will Baptist Society of Winneconne, Baptist services were held in Winneconne as early as 1856. Services were held in a store building near the river on the west side, and later in a log school house on the west side. On December 8, 1870, a committee of the Waupun Quarterly Meeting composed of Elders W. Whiting, F.C. Partridge, and F.B. Moulton met with a committee from the Winneconne Society to discuss organizing a church here. It was an all-day meeting and by evening the church was organized. The officers were; Mr. Hugh Newton, Church Clerk; and Mr. E.H. Cross and Mr. S.F. Smith, Deacons. It was voted to call the new organization the Free Will Baptist Church. The male members of full age belonging to the congreagation met one week later in the school house for the purpose of incorporating themselves into a church society. They elected Julius Ashby, W.H. Williams, S.F. Smith and George C. King as Trustees and called Elder Moulton as Pastor. February 24, 1872, the Articles of Incorporation were recorded with the Register of Deeds of Winnebago County Wisconsin. In 1872 the congregation erected their first church which was of brick with a high steeple, one story and a basement with a kitchen and dining area. The early members were strick with their church discipline, yet their social life was not neglected for we read of many socials and suppers. The Deacons were elected for life and it was considered the greatest honor conferred on a layman. At this time the membership included about 22 families. These early Baptists were very attentive to all church meetings. Besides their regular morning and evening services on Sunday, there were cottage prayer meetings every week, and the last Saturday of every month was a monthly covenant meeting. This was the time they renewed the Covenant with their God. This was followed by a business meeting, each giving a "dime" to defray expenses of the church. There were also Quarterly Meetings of the Waupun Association which met at various churches. They drove for miles with horse and buggy and stayed two or three days. Between the years of 1872 and 1895, there were eleven pastors with the church. They are: Elder F.B. Moulton 1870-1872, Elder Rufus Clark 1872-1872, Elder Reynolds 1874 (6 months), Elder Kayser 1874-1881, Elder Coffeen 1881-1882, Elder B.L. Prescott 1882-1885, Elder boyd, 1885 (10 months), Elder O.H. True 1885-1888, Elder B.F. McKinney 1888-1892, Elder Steel 1892-1893, Elder Kayser 1893-1895 . Also serving in 1895 were: Elder Hopkins, elder Jones, and Elder Hemmerly. In the "Great Fire of Winneconne" August 8, 1894, the church was destroyed. The church members met at the school house for a special meeting to discuss rebuilding the church. About a month later the building plans were accepted and the Trustees were instructed to proceed with rebuilding. The first services wer held in the new church in February, 1895. In 1913, by vote of the Church members they transferred all property rights, titles and interest of the Free Will Baptist Church to the Wisconsin Baptist State Convention (American Baptist) and the Winnebago Baptist Association. The church then became known as The First Baptist Church of Winneconne. In September of 1970, a centennial of the church was celebrated with three former pastors taking part. Dr. O.P. Lovik of Winneconne, Rev. Robert Weigner of Eau Claire, and Rev. Kenneth Craig of Ontario." The church is still at it's original site at the corner of 3rd St. and Adams in Winneconne,Wisconsin. The church building has not been altered on the exterior, but has undergone several changes on the interior through the years. In 2002 the congregation voted to change the name of the church to Winneconne Christian Fellowship after having withdrawn from the Wisconsin Baptist Church. This weekend will be a celebration of 110 years of our church building. Arlene

Susan was his 4th wife. She actually was his sister-n-law (Susan was his brother-n-law's wife). Do you have any other information on him or his famiy? Also, would love information on the church! Where it was, etc. Are there any other Jacobson's mentioned? His father was Frederik Ferdinand Jacobson and he had sons, Richard, Roy, William, & daughters Merle & Bell. I think that most of the others were Lutheran for some reason or went to a church in Winchester...but wanted to check. Thanks so much!
