    1. Newspaper obit
    2. Jill Rains
    3. Dear list, I was wondering if there was any source to locate a newspaper obit for someone who died in Waushara Co., WI in 1903. I am looking for the obit for Dr. Harmon A. McWain who died 23 Dec. 1903. He was the resident physician for Poy Sippi in the 1890s and was also the President for the Badger telephone line in the mid 1890s that ran from Poy Sippi to Saxville. Dr. McWain was married to Emma Mathews who was listed as living in Poy Sippi in 1900. Dr. McWain was not listed as living with her at that point, however, he may have been enumerated somewhere else. I haven't been able to find him in 1900 at this point in my research. Harmon's father was also Harmon McWain and he is found in Ludlow, VT with Harmon Jr.'s mother, Amanda in 1900. Any help with Waushara Co., WI information on this Harmon McWain or the Mathews family would be a blessing. Blessings, Jill Watters Rains

    1. Otto Ackerman & Parents Lawrence & Anna ROTHE
    2. Faith
    3. Hello All! I have just received some information regarding my great and great great grandparents. Otto Ackermann according to his birth certificate was born 07 May 1891 in Sheboygan City, Sheboygan County, WI. His parents Lawrence(with various spellings: Laurenz, Larenz, etc.) were both born in Germany(which we knew.) But...according to the 1920 US census they came to America from Bavaria in 1884 and was naturalized in 1906. According to what I had on ship records below: Passenger's Name: Lorenz Ackermann Age: 21 Gender: Male Occupation: Miner Last Residence: Switzerland Date of Arrival: Jul. 13, 1882 Final Destination: USA Ship's Name: France Manifest ID Number: 80201 Port of Embarkation: Havre But....nothing on Anna ROTHE and they were married 18 years in 1900, so where is she on the ship? Also, Lorenz's age would be correct born in Oct of 1860. Annie which according to her son's birth record is now ROTHE and not ROTH. So it appears to me I have cleared up one question. She was born in Brandenberg. 1900 census records state that they came to the US in 1880. Both the 1900 - 1920 are in Waukesha County. I am not sure about 1930 yet. So if Otto was born in Shebogan County their son, is this where the papers would be filed or in Waukesha County? Another question: Can anyone tell me about Bavaria and Brandenberg? Do they keep birth records? Would love to get Anna Rothe's. Any suggestions on papers, naturalizations, Germany information or any comments will be greatly appreciated. Please help me in the right directions. Thank you, Faith

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Save the Graves!!! Our Civil War Ancestors!
    2. Faith
    3. I am forwarding this by copying and pasting this. I believe this is valuable to all genealogy searchers whether living in this town or not. I hope all the administers will approve this and pass this on. Everyone should sign and save any part of history of our ancestors! Don't you agree? Thank you, Faith I know that you're all interested in some way or another with WV history and/or cemeteries in WV. A friend of ours from Charleston, WV brought this online petition to our attention where folks can voice their support for saving a Civil War battlefield and burial ground located in Fayetteville, WV in preference to building a retail complex on the site. We know that this is a "win-able" situation if as many as possible voice their opinions. In our own city, just a few months ago, a planned K-Mart was moved to a different location when local citizens discovered that the city's plans were to fill in one of the last remaining natural lakes within city limits in order to build the new shopping complex on top of it. With enough signatures they were able to get the cause placed on the ballot at the next election, and it won overwhelming favor from the community in favor of saving the lake and sending the developers to another part of town that was more acceptable to the city residents. Enough voices heard together can make quite a noticeable noise! To view the petition and make a choice whether or not to make your opinion heard (and you don't need to be a WV resident to take part), visit http://www.PetitionOnline.com/faybat04/petition.html Thanks for taking the time to read this, Donna Duprey

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Leonard Ackermann information please.
    2. Faith
    3. Hello All, Looking for any information regarding Leonard Ackermann came over on the ship France in Jul. 13, 1882. Last residence was Switzerland. He was miner, age 38 at the time. Trying to confirm if he is a brother to my Lorenz? I have Lorenz in 1900 - Waukesha Co., City of Menomonee, WI.; 1910 - same Don't have in 1920 or 1930 could possibly be in St. Croix County. So if this is his brother, I wonder if he is in the same area at these times. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Lorenz was born in Germany so I would think that Leonard would have too. Other Ackermann women that sailed with are: Louise 21, Marie 51, and another Marie 21. They night be with them. Any help appreciated!! Faith

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Ackermann m. Roth Ship France help please.
    2. Faith
    3. Hello All, Elsie had found for me the following a while back and I had a couple of questions. Passenger's Name: Lorenz Ackermann Age: 21 Gender: Male Occupation: Miner Last Residence: Switzerland Date of Arrival: Jul. 13, 1882 Final Destination: USA Ship's Name: France Manifest ID Number: 80201 Port of Embarkation: Havre I was wondering if anyone had access to this and could tell me who came over with him? He was married to Anna ROTH(E) Ackermann b. 20 Mar 1858/1860(no marriage date) and possibly had child with them. The first known child's birth that I have is 1887 Catherine "Katie", 1888 Antone, and 1891 Octavius "Otto" Faulding(he is my great grandfather and all three that I have are born in WI. So I am missing one or two. They settled in WI. and according to the 1900 U.S. Census she had 4 children and 4 living but only 3 listed. In 1910 listed having 5 children and only 3 listed. Don't have them in 1920 U.S. Census(Any help appreciated.) They might have moved to Saint Croix Co. as to this is where Otto was born. 1900 - Waukesha Co., City of Menomonee, WI.; 1910 - same. Anna died 06 June 1920 so I am wondering where or if she was caught on the census at this time(depends on when it was taken). I don't have a death for Lourenz Ackermann but he was b. Oct. 1860 Would also like to get copies of their naturalization papers, but only have access to the computer at this time; any suggestions? Thank you so much, Faith

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Can anyone do a library look up for me?
    2. Faith
    3. Hello All! Would like to know if someone could do a look up for me on naturalization papers at the library? I live in Green Bay and the University of Wisconsin Green Bay doesn't have records for that area. I will pay for copies on anything found regarding my two families. I am looking for John & Annie ROEDER Eich. Year of immigration to the U.S. in 1888. In 1900 Census in Milwaukee County town of Wauwatosa, it states that Annie had 8 children and 8 living. I have two with them on the census born in Germany; Annie(13) & Katherine(11). 4 of them born in WI. So either two are older and stayed in Germany or moved on out of the house in WI. The next would be: Lorenz(has different spellings) & Anna ROTH(E?) Ackermann. Year of immigration to the U.S. in 1880. In 1900 Census in Waukesha County town of Menomonee. It states she had 4 children and 4 are living. I have 3 listed all born in WI. So I am missing one. I also have this on Lorenz: Passenger's Name: Lorenz Ackermann Age: 21 Gender: Male Occupation: Miner Last Residence: Switzerland Date of Arrival: Jul. 13, 1882 Final Destination: USA Ship's Name: France Manifest ID Number: 80201 Port of Embarkation: Havre So if anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated!!! Please let me know if you can. Thanks, Faith

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Lorenz Ackermann & John H. Eich Families
    2. Faith
    3. Hello All! I am searching for any information regarding Lorenz(various spellings) and Anna ROTH Ackermann. Also, John H. Eich and Annie ROEDER. All born in Germany according to census records. These are my great great grandparents. For Lorenz his last residence from Switzerland according to passenger records. I have found Lorenz coming over from the ship called France in 1882(see below) Passenger's Name: Lorenz Ackermann Age: 21 Gender: Male Occupation: Miner Last Residence: Switzerland Date of Arrival: Jul. 13, 1882 Final Destination: USA Ship's Name: France Manifest ID Number: 80201 Port of Embarkation: Havre As you can see I don't have anything else on the family. I am wondering if his wife came over with him. According to US Census records year of immigration to the US was 1880. So are we just off by two years or did they come on separate ships? Would love to know more about this family. Would love to know more about the ship France and it's voyages. Now, as for John H. and Annie ROEDER Eich I don't have a ship for any of them. They immigrated over in 1888 according to US Census records. I believe they would have came over with at least 2-3 children too. Annie and Katherine both also born in Germany. Both families were from Milwaukee & Waukesha Counties. If anyone can help me find these passengers and maybe a direction on where to go next, that would be great! I am new to the ships and immigration process and have a small child so Internet right now is unfortunately the only access I have. I would be grateful to any help!!! Thank you, Faith

Any suggestions where to start? John H. b. 1857 & Annie ROEDER b. 1859 EICH They came over in about 1888(according to census records) and have been unable to locate ship records as of yet. These are my great great grandparents and would love to know where we came from. I know they both spoke German fluently. Any suggestions on where to start for citizenship papers? They were both from WI. area. Any suggestions or help appreciated! Thanks, Faith A. Blount

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Dr. H A McWain
    2. Jill Rains
    3. Dear List, Thanks to the "1890 Portrait and Bio Album of Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara Counties" web page, I believe I have a link that may help me find a great great uncle. Under the heading of Poysippi it stated that a "Dr. H.A. McWain was a resident physician." Then I found two other online entries under the "Waupaca Republican" which referred to Dr McWain being the President of the Badger telephone line in 1895 and 1896. In the Saxeville.org site I found a reference for a "Dr. MacWain of Poy Sippi..." I believe this is Harmon Abraham McWain who was born Dec. 10, 1855 in East Dorset, Bennington Co., VT. He was the son of Harmon Blackmer McWain and Amanda Malvina Coolidge of Plymouth, Windsor Co., VT. He was the just younger sibling to my 2nd great grandmother, Jennie McWain Sawyer, and I've been looking for him for quite awhile. I had one reference that he practiced medicine in Chigago, but that reference was in the late 1880s. I could never find him in Chicago, nor could I find an obituary there for his 1903 death or either of his two wives (Annie L. Dudley and Emma Mathews). One of the references for "The Republican" in 1895 states that "McWain has a pleasant home, good office, store and post office all near together and conveniently arranged. The Doctor has a large practice in this section, the telephone line being a great convenience." I would like to know if anyone can help me locate these places mentioned as well as a bit more about this Dr. H A McWain. Many blessings, Jill Watters Rains

    1. [WIWAUSHA] Looking for any Van Airsdales
    2. Erica Jacobson
    3. Howdy, I'm looking for information about any Van Airsdales, especially those descended from Garfield or his sons, Arden Gerald or Kenneth Van Airsdale. I know they were definitely from the county and perhaps from the Wild Rose or Springwater areas. Arden may have had a wife named Dorothy and daughters Lilah and Thelma. I believe he eventually moved to the Milwaukee area where he died in 1972. I'm not sure what happened in Wisconsin, but Garfield eventually married Hulda Wallen Jacobson and lived in Chicago. She was the first wife of one of my grandfather's uncles and I've been trying to track down information about this family. 3. RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine Vol. 6, No. 46, 12 November 2003, Circulation: 941,133+ (c) 1998-2003 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ 1b. Grabbing Your Cousins' Attention When you see a message posted on the mailing lists and message boards with a subject line such as: "HELP!!!" "Searching!" "Looking for "Genealogy!" "Desperate!" and even (no subject) -- what's your reaction? Shrug and move on? We all were newbies once upon a time, but if you want to get the most out of your queries, spruce up your subject lines. For even though you might draft your messages carefully and explain in detail what information you seek -- including the name(s) of the ancestor(s), where the individual or family lived, and a time frame, if your subject line doesn't grab the readers, you won't hear from anyone. The vast majority of browsers and subscribers take roughly one second -- that's right, one second -- to decide whether a message is of interest to them and whether they are going to read further. The decision whether to bypass or read the message is often determined by the subject line alone and not the message content. Digest subscribers (on mailing lists) often scan the subjects of the messages in a digest index to determine whether they are going to scroll through to read the actual messages. Subjects such as the ones listed above, no matter how many exclamation points are added, no matter how urgent your pleas for help, and no matter how many caps are used, do not inform the reader of the message content. They do nothing to "grab" anyone's attention. Experienced researchers often lament that they'd love to help more, but don't have the time to wade through messages that do not contain the foundation of genealogical research: names, dates and places. No one, except a close cousin, really cares how you are related to someone. Save those relationship explanations for private correspondence. A good subject line should provide the reader with information about the message to which it is attached. It should be concise but complete enough to explain who or what the message concerns, the time frame, and the location, if known. Abbreviate only where necessary due to a character limit, such as on the message boards, and remember that this is the Internet and the boards and lists have an international audience. Don't assume your Australian cousins know what you mean with American abbreviations. Add USA, UK, etc. Examples of good subject lines are: --Information sought about Joseph JOHNSON, b. 1862 in Frederick County, Maryland, USA --Census info needed for George HOLTON, 1901, Somerset, England --Peter BURNS m. Olive HAWKINS, 1879, Melbourne, Australia--need parents for both --Susanna, m. Johannes BENDER, Rockingham County, Virginia, USA, 1788--maiden name? --Need date and place of marriage of John SMITH and Sarah JONES-- lived Ohio, USA 1850 The reader will know at a glance if the above messages are of interest to them personally and also if they may have resources that might have the information. A reader who has a book on Ohio marriages in the 1850s may well read the message about John SMITH and Sarah JONES and look for the information even if he is not personally connected to this family. Other important tips about using a meaningful subject subject line are: --If you are replying to a list or board message and the subject of your reply changes from the one in the earlier message(s) in the thread, change/update the subject line accordingly, and --If you are a digest subscriber and replying to a message in a digest, be sure to change the subject to pertain to the actual message to which you are replying rather than leaving the digest name and number as the subject line. The subject line you create for your query is the "hook" that either draws the reader in or sends him on to the next message passing yours by. So, don't cry aimlessly for "HELP!!!!!" -- let the reader know what you are looking for at a glance with a meaningful, concise subject.
