Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TFC.2ACE/482.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Mary Jo ~ I did a quick check of a couple of census records for you. In the 1860 census, only one Josiah Crain or Crane shows up ~ as follows: 1860 -- Waukesha Village, Waukesha Co., WI -- CRAIN, Josiah, age 39, insurance agent, born NY. CRAIN, Caroline, age 35, born NY. CRAIN, Frank, age 12, born NJ. CRAIN, Charles, age 10, born MI. CRAIN, Mary, age 8, born OH. CRAIN, George, age 5, born OH. CRAIN, Jerard, age 3, born WI. Assuming that the above Josiah Crain is your Josiah, his family sure did some traveling (judging by the various children's birthplaces). I also notice that the census taker wrote down Josiah's wife's name as "Caroline" (an error?). The 1880 U.S. census has no Jared Crain or Crain (nor a Jerard). It does have one Walter Crane or Crain, the right age for your ancestor. That listing is below: 1880 U.S. census -- Eden, Clinton County, Iowa: Household -- C. M. MAULEY, head of household, age 29, born VT, Merchant, father born MA, mother born VT. Mary MAULEY, Wife, age 20, born IA, father born IA, mother born NY. Walter CRANE, relationship: other, age 22, born WI, occupation: hardware, father born NY, mother born NY. Hope something here helps. Best, Kathe C.
