    1. [WIWAUKES] Re: Waukesha Co Records - contact info
    2. This is in response to the questions about Waukesha County research facilities, available records, and so forth -- For information about records at the Waukesha Co courthouse, holdings at the Waukesha Co Historical Museum Research Center and Waukesha Public Library, go to: http://members.aol.com/lakehist/corecord.htm Contact info (telephone, address) for each facility may also be found at the above URL. (The courthouse has a prerecorded information line, too.) The research center in particular might be a good source of info re: naturalization records and/or where to find them. Personally, I'd just telephone the research center prior to writing or visiting. They might be able to tell you if they have what you're looking for. You might also try: The State Historical Society of Wisconsin http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/ Waukesha County was formed in 1846. Its parent county was Milwaukee. Early records or information about early records might also be found at: Milwaukee County Genealogical Society, Inc. http://www.mpl.org/files/great/golink.cfm?ID=848 Milwaukee County Wisconsin Genealogy WIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimilwau/ The Milwaukee County Historical Society Home Page http://www.milwaukeecountyhistsoc.org/ MILW URBAN ARCHIVES - Archives and Manuscript Repositories in Wisconsin http://www.uwm.edu/Library/arch Hope this helps. 2. Vital records research should be done at the Waukesha Co Courthouse. Last year, when I researched there, I did not need an appointment. Notes can be taken in pencil only, no pens.

    3. Hi! I just subscribed to this list today and I'm very uncertain about what I'm looking for. My gggrandfather, Matthew Maule (b. ~1820-1), emigrated to Waukesha County from somewhere in Scotland, along with a relative (exact connection unknown) named Duncan Maule and his wife Ann (Reid). They arrived in NY in Feb. of 1843 and arrived in Ottawa (Dousman) the following May. Following this, they all went to Sullivan Twp. in Jefferson County for a few years, but returned to Ottawa sometime prior to 1850. Matthew married Elizabeth Thomas in Ottawa in 1848(?) and had 2 children, Mary and John. Elizabeth died in 1850 and Mary died in 1852. It is from John that I am descended. In 1856, Matthew remarried and moved to Jackson County, leaving John in Ottawa to be raised by Duncan and Ann (who were otherwise childless). They were members of the Presbyterian church there, and all but Matthew are buried in Ottawa cemetery. That is essentially all I know, and I desperately want to know more. My primary goal is to learn from where in Scotland Matthew emigrated and who his parents (and beyond) were, as well as what his exact relationship was to Duncan Maule. I have copies of 2 biographical sketches on Duncan Maule and John Maule (_History of Waukesha County_, 1880; and _Memoirs of Waukesha County_, 1907), both of which tell me very little of practical value. I have been unable to locate their names on passenger lists for ships arriving in NY in 1843, nor are passenger lists available for ships coming through the Lakes to the Port of Milwaukee then (to the best of my knowledge). Furthermore, there is nothing useful in the IGI that definitively pinpoints the family's roots in Scotland. I am hoping that someone on this list will be kind enough to point me in the right direction(s). I live in Colorado and have no direct and handy access to Waukesha records, so I will be conducting this research via telephone and mail. I don't mind that, and I'm not here hinting for free labor, but I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions for making this as efficient and cost-effective as possible. I have surfed the Web exhaustively, but I'm still uncertain as to what records exist for 1843-1856 Waukesha County and what information they contain. If anyone has answers (or even guesses) to any of the following questions, I would be very grateful: Where are Naturalization Records located for Waukesha County for that time? What information is contained in them? Did churches (specifically the Presbyterian church in Ottawa) keep detailed records of events? Did the county keep birth/marriage/death records, etc., which required dates/place of birth and/or information on parents/background? Did cemeteries keep such information, and is it still accessible? Was background information required to apply to homestead land? Is that available? Is anyone else researching a Maule or Maul? Is there any useful information likely to be found at the various historical/genealogical societies or the Golda Meir Library? Anything else? Any other ideas? I thought I had more questions than this... Any information or suggestions here or by private email, will be accepted with profuse gratitude. Nancy nancy15@ix.netcom.com

    2. I just found this on the Tioga County, NY GenWeb page, and feel it is worth passing on and sharing with all of you. Enjoy! Mikki Judge Buffalo, IA Genealogy Humor GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late, She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy - for the Family Tree. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea, Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one, Alas!, the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are all each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we all supposed! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our Tea (herb) We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell, We talk about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor and then - 'twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring. She told him all about the past and soon was plain to see The preacher, too, was nearly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was....Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict - she's hooked on Family Trees! Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree!" 1. what is my connection to Waukesha(I hope you read this)
    2. Tony Vanderpool
    3. One of the listeners asked the following questions of me, when I replied to a question asked on the list and I said that I was there in 1997. saw your message to hurricaned are you from waukesha, wisconsin? were you researching your ancestors? did you go to the genealogy library downtown in the old courthouse? And this is my reply : Hi Bonni, Thanks for the Email, it is great to hear from other people other than family members. You asked some questions and here are the answers. 1--no I am not from waukesha, I was born here in Australia. 2--yes I was researching my family 3-- and I did go to the old courthouse and the 2 girls in there were very helpful to me. Now I will tell you how I got into family history and I hope I don't bore you to much. Back in 1995 I got real sick and I finally said to myself that the last thing I wanted to do was have a look at the birth place of my father, and also where he grow up ( Montana) after his father died . Also to try and find out if my aunts and uncle were still living because after the war (2) dad move here to marry my mother, and he lost contact with his family. Dad never talked about his family back in the States, so I was going off what mum had remembered. I'll just add here that dad died when I was 10, so I know very little. Mum gave me the names of his brother and sisters ( just first names ) and also his army discharge papers and this is all I had to go by. I had 2 years to try and fine out where they were as I was coming over in 97 right or wrong. I wrote to as meny departments in the States that I could and phoned up meny Vanderpool's that I could with no luck and meny dollars spent on this. In the end I started to arrange my trip and I new that I could get a US passport so I applied for it and I needed my fathers birth cert. and I new that he was born in Quitman, GA. so I rang the court house there and a lady ( Elizabeth ) answered the phone which she never does normally, when asked what I was after birth cert. of my dad John Livingston Vanderpool, her reply was Johnny, I know Johnny we grow up together and I explained who I was and the little info I had from the army papers ( his fathers name and mothers maiden name ) it turned out that we were cousins through dad's mothers side. Now Elizabeth helped me out a lot with land records and the will of my fathers, grandfather ( John S.U. Willson) this one "Will" helped my down the track further. Now Elizabeth know of my uncle and aunts but didn't know where they were, so we wrote to each other, but I was still at a dead end. Now from here it was now only 6 months till my trip, so I found out the name of a magazine that you could put a add in. I paced this add in the " Everton's Genealogical Helper" Jan/Feb 97 edition and off all the people that read this mag only 1 person ( Virginia, from Texas ) wrote to me and she gave my the death notice of my grandmother ( died NY.) now in this letter she wrote that the Eliza Vanderpool (nee Willson) was not part of here family line, and that she was after a John S. U. Wilson that had a daughter Elizabeth Ramsay ( nee Willson ), now this is where the will came in, it had Mrs Eliza Vanderpool formally Eliza Ramsay written in it. I wrote back to Virginia and sent here a copy of the will and it also turned out to be that Virginia was my cousin also, but she did not find that second marriage. With the return of here second letter, Virginia asked if there was anything that she could do she would be more then happy to do anything for me. I rang her as I was running out of time to try and find my uncle and aunts. So from here Virginia looked in the phone book (NY) for a George Vanderpool (my uncle) she found one and rang him up and explained who she was and what she was after, the George that she rang was not my uncle but my first cousin ( my uncle's son ). Now all this was about one month before I was to leave, Virginia rang me up and told me the news and that George was very interested in meeting me on my trip over so I jumped at it and rang George up as soon as I could and we talked for about a hour. I found out at this point that Uncle George, Aunt Jennie both passed away, George--July 1969, Jennie--Dec, 1970 and my dad passed away Sep,1969 so it was very sad, but there was still Aunt Frances living in NM. So I rang here up and we had a very tearful reunion on the phone, and I told here that I would be there in two weeks and she just cried as none of the family in the States new of use over here in Australia. Now I am getting back to how I came to be in Waukesha. When talking to Aunt Frances she had told me of the Vanderpool Reunion that was held their in 1970, and that my Grandfather was born in Elkhorn,WI. So on the trip around the States I was going past Waukesha and decided to stop there and the only place I could think of to find out anything was a family history center, so my port of call was the Genealogy Library in the old court house. I arrived there about 4 PM and I asked them if they new of the Vanderpool Reunions that are held their, the lovely girl there just said how much do I won't to know about the Vanderpool family line as they have quite a lot of family info. all that I said was for the moment I would like to know if they had anything on the reunions, so they got out a box which had some old reunion newspaper clipping and we looked at the names that was present at them and then looked in the phone book for some names, and there was only two names that matched, so that night I rang Allen and went through the normal thing of saying who I was and soforth, by 7.30 I was meeting cousins on my Vanderpool side and was planning to go to my first one in 1998 ( which I did attend, a long way to fly but was well worth the trip). Now back to the Library after the newspaper clipping, the girl there asked whether if I would like any more info and I said of course and we made arrangements for the next day at 9 am, and when I got to the library there was 2 full tables of Vanderpool info that the girls there got ready for me to look at when I arrived and I think it was 5 hours latter and a lot of photo coping I left there a very happy person and very grateful for the help that the two girls gave me. Well Bonni this is my story and I hope that I have not bored you to much, and I hope it is not to confusing. It was my pleasure to answer your questions. As I sit and write this message to you, I think I might post it to the list and it might just give other people some help, just don't give up, something will turn up if you try hard enough. I was only 38 and I have found my meny cousins there in the US. But most important is that I found my only living aunt and first cousins and now have a very good family relationship with then all after 38 of knowing nothing of that American Family. 3. Dear Tony, I read your email and thought it was very interesting about finding your information in Waukesha. I am originally from that part of the US and many of my ancestors are buried there. My problems tracing my ancestry were many. I didn't know where my father was born, where my parents were married, but did have a bit of information about my paternal grandfather being born in a town in the State of Indiana. I ran an ad in the personals in that city and before you knew it, I received a letter from a retired railroad man there, who likes to use the internet to research various ancestories. It wasn't long before he was sending me numerous information about my ancestors, including photos of the tombstones of my GGrandfather and Grandmother, and records of my paternal side of the family going all the way back to 1710, in Northern Ireland. In September of this year, my wife and I are taking a trip to Northern Ireland and Scotland because I also want to see the country where my ancestors came from originally. I am 69 years old and prior to receiving this information this past year, I didn't know that I had any Irish or Scotch/Irish blood in me. The Head of Clan Henderson is our Chieftain, Alistar D. Henderson Younger of Fordell, 125 Annie Street, Torwood. Queensland 4066, Australia. To sum it all up, you were right about never giving up in searching. You never know where you might find valuable information. Respectfully yours, Paul G. Henderson Spokane, Washington
