    1. Re: Forest Home
    2. Hi Molly, Saw your repeat query regarding Kolo or Kolouch at Forest Home Cemetery. Did you not receive the answer that I sent you way back in March? I volunteer every Friday at Forest HOme and answered directly to you address at discover-net.net that there are no Kolouch's located anywhere in the burial records of Forest Home Cemetery and that the only Kolo's listed are a John and a Helen Kolo. I also mentioned that there are no Gretzke's buried at the cemetery. Bob of Brookfield

    1. Waukesha Co - research resources & accommodations
    2. Bobbie - If you're planning to do research in Waukesha County, the best place to start would be the Waukesha County Historical Society Museum & Research Center, located in downtown Waukesha. Information about the research center's holdings (including cemetery records), location and business hours may be viewed at: My Waukesha County Index http://members.aol.com/lakehist/corecord.htm You might also want to stop in at Waukesha Public Library (for Federal & State censuses on microfilm, archived newspapers - obits from the Waukesha Freeman are indexed) and the County Courthouse (for vital statistics, probate and land records). Location, business hours, etc., for the library and courthouse may also be found at the above URL. (Once there, you'll also find a brief description of the library's Family History Research holdings. Just follow the hyperlink.) I note that your ancestor was a physician in early day Waukesha County. When you're at the Waukesha County Historical Society Research Center, be sure to ask to see the notebook containing records compiled by the Women's Auxiliary of the Waukesha County Medical Society. This group made it their business (in 1939) to compile information about physicians who had early day practices in Waukesha County. Birth, death and biographical data, newspaper citations and interviews with the physician's (local) relatives are some of the items included in the Women's Auxiliary compilations. I found much useful info on my gg grandfather in this resource. Be sure to call in advance of your stay to confirm the research center's business hours. They've been short-staffed in recent times; this may affect the hours that they are open. Places to stay in Waukesha: For a list of accommodations and a handy map of Waukesha, go to: http://www.visitwaukesha.org/main.html If you wish to stay closer to Mukwonago, you might want to check out the Eagle Centre House Bed & Breakfast. Located on Hwy 67, near Eagle. Mukwonago is within a short driving distance as well. Their website is: www.eagle-house.com I hope you enjoy your stay in Waukesha. Best regards, Sue Ellen Williams (WilliamsWI@aol.com)

    3. Please note that I found my father's discharge summary at the Waukesha County Museum and Research Center, filed in a file cabinet. He was in the Army Air Corps during WWII. If your family member served during WWII, you may (as I did ) naively assume that the federal government has maintained service records -- however, a fire destroyed most of those records. The Waukesha resource allowed me to find the unit with which my father went to Saipan at the end of the war and to better understand his military experiences. 1. Mukwonago-Big Bend info needed
    2. Bobbie
    3. I am planning a trip to the Mukwonago and Big Bend, as well as Waukesha, area in the next couple of months. I am interested in suggestions as to the best places to research, libraries, governemtal offices, etc. Locations and hours would also be appreciated. My main interests are the Collins family of Mukwonago. William Penn Collins was the first doctor there from about 1858. The family was buried in the Rural Home Cemetery of Big Bend. Was this cemetery compiled or are records available to be searched? Also, the Unitarian Universalist Church in Mukwonago. Can anyone tell me anything about what records might be available from the beginning of the church until about 1905? William Penn Collins was supposed to have been a charter member. Also, I am looking for accommodations that would be near to all of the above locations. Thanks for any assistance. Bobbie

    1. KLUG
    2. For Penny re: KLUG - First [German] Evangelical Reformed Kirche - Town of New Berlin Inscriptions copied from tombstones and transcribed by Mrs. Edith M. Tallmadge & Rev. F. Heilert (June 1936): KLUG, Florence (lot# not shown) Dau of C. & H. Klug 3 Oct 1894 - 12 Nov 1894 Penny - With regard to the reliability of Mrs. Tallmadge's work, I agree - her work is flawed at times, but I have to wonder exactly how flawed it is with regard to the old German Lutheran Church Cemetery (also referred to as the German Evangelical Church Cemetery) at the corner of Calhoun Road and Capitol Drive in Section 4 in the Town of Brookfield. Here's why: My gg grandfather and his brother-in-law are both buried at the aforementioned cemetery. Their names and vital stats were inscribed on opposite sides of the same tombstone. Members of my family have been visiting the gravesite since the 1880s. In the mid-1970s, I had the presence of mind to "read" the stone, copy both inscriptions and take a rubbing of the stone. Some years later, I came across Mrs. Tallmadge's transcribed work on the cemetery and found that her notations matched what I had already discovered for myself. Last spring, I received a copy of a "revised" list of the cemetery's tombstone transcriptions obtained from the Wisconsin State Old Cemetery Society. This list, compiled by Douglas Hennig in 1980, shows the tombstone transcription for both of my ancestors but states that the inscription for my gg grandfather's brother-in-law was "incorrectly" copied by Mrs. Tallmadge. Interestingly enough, Hennig's revised list also includes Mrs. Tallmadge's tombstone inscription for my gg grandfather, but indicates that his tombstone "is missing as of 1980". Actually, as of April 2000, the tombstone shared by my gg grandfather and his brother-in-law is STILL standing. My point? Transcribed records, perhaps particularly those pertaining to tombstone inscriptions, are not always reliable - and that goes double for transcriptions of transcriptions. To verify accuracy, ALWAYS check primary records whenever possible. - Best regards, Sue Ellen Williams (WilliamsWI@aol.com)

Herrick & Wendy K. Uncapher, 1999: Evangelical and Reformed of New Berlin, in Section 18; on CTH Y, just south of Coffee Road. NOTE: Transcribed tombstone inscriptions may contain errors. Firstly, the person viewing the stone may "misread" the inscription, especially if the stone is very old or in poor condition. Secondly, ALL transcribed records are subject to human error (i.e. typos, transposition, etc.). Therefore, to verify accuracy, be sure to cross-check the following transcribed inscriptions against primary records whenever possible. Best regards - Sue Ellen Williams (WilliamsWI@aol.com) Inscriptions copied from tombstones and transcribed by Mrs. Edith M. Tallmadge & Rev. F. Heilert (June 1936): DAMM, Christ L. (Lot #2) d. 24 Jan 1874; age 76 yrs, 2 mos, 21 days. Prior - Lot#2. These [abbreviated] names may indicate the owner of each plot, although the diagram does not specifically state this. According to Tallmadge/Heilert, other persons buried in lots 1 & 2 are as follows: In Lot #1: SAUR, Adam d. 4 Oct 1875; age 35 yrs, 9 mos. In Lot #2: PRIOR, Barbara 1 Sep 1824 - 3 Feb 1895 PRIOR, Barbara 9 Nov 1865; age 3 mos PRIOR, Mary 1 Sep 1864; age 3 mos, 16 days

    3. It is sort of odd that this Klug is alone there, isn't it? Looks like just what we need -- another Carl Klug! I wonder how many there are in Wisconsin? My Carl and Louise Klug of Wauwatosa are related at least by marriage to Ziemers of Mersin, Pomerania. They lived next door to my great grandparents Ziemer. I am always watching for related Klugs trying to track Ziemer movements to find the home village of my great grandfather.
