    1. [WIWAUKES] Waukesha Co. Museum
    2. Pam
    3. If I could append just a bit to my previous message, I wanted to clarify that it was not Mrs. Tallmadge (1877-1968) who started the historical society or museum, only that she was a significant figure in making it what it became and that she was active for quite some time. (She assisted my grandmother with genealogical information in the 1950s--I have copies of several letters with Mrs. T's characteristic side notes adding to or clarifying her so-so typing.) I believe historian J. H. A. Lacher came before her and got things rolling for the museum, and no doubt there were other unsung members who contributed in various ways. I don't have command of all the details of of the history of the historical society anymore, but I did want to mention Mrs. T's work for those who wouldn't otherwise know who she was. -- Pam Berger Pam wrote: > Edith Tallmadge was the first Waukesha County historian, which may not have been an > official post at that time. 2. Pam
    3. Laura, The Wis. Industrial School, was the forerunner of what is now the Ethan Allen School for boys, a "reform" school or perhaps it would be called a juvenile prison now, for boys who have committed repeated or fairly serious crimes. It is located in Wales, Wis. also in Waukesha County. I have no idea if they have a sense of history or recognize any connection to the old Industrial School. There was also another reform school called Norris Farm, now Norris High School, in the Mukwonago area, which now operates as an alternative high school for mostly court-referred boys and some others. About 1920 one of my great uncles, then a young boy, was sent to live there for a time after his mother died. ---Pam Berger picklepolly@yahoo.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: thomas > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TFC.2ACE/569 > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for any information on the Wisconsin Industrial School it was a reform school.Does anyone know where I can get any info? 3. Edith Tallmadge was the first Waukesha County historian, which may not have been an official post at that time. She was the wife of a local photographer. Many of the records and ideas which eventually helped form the collections at the Museum research library would not exist if it were not for Mrs. Tallmadge's interest in history and genealogy and her efforts to collect, preserve, and make available information relating to the history of Waukesha County. She did not have professional training for the position as one would probably have today. She continued her work well into advanced years, so don't be too hard on her for errors. Genealogical facts should be multiple sourced whenever possible anyway. To the best of my recollection Mrs. Tallmadge was not paid or if so only a pittance, and had virtually nothing to work with and little help. I worked for the subsequent County Historian, Leona Postell, back in the late 1960s and 1970s. Both of these women deserve the highest praise for their work under difficult circumstances and have never been sufficiently recognized for their contributions. --Pam Berger "Penelope Z. 1. [WIWAUKES] Waukesha His. Museum and WWII
    2. Penelope Z. Ford
    3. If your family members lived in Waukesha County at the time of their WWII service, you may find at this museum the only record of their service, in the form of their discharge record. The county's copy of the discharge record has been given to the Museum for storage. I was poking around in there on a brief trip about two years ago and happened to run into the file cabinet, looked for my dad, and found him! Although his entire service record was not there, by a long shot, the dates of his overseas service (when he shipped out, from where), when he was inducted and where, his address at the time of enlistment, etc., all were there. Since, amazingly enough, most "real" service records were destroyed by fire, this may be your one chance to get details of the service record of yourself, your father or mother, grandfather or grandmother. 3. Mrs. Talmadge, whomever she may have been, and no doubt very well meaning, now is nonetheless infamous for her clerical error in copying tombstones. Be wary of her inclusions, of her exclusions, of her errors. I have found, for example with the now-abandoned Oak Hill Cemetery in Wauwatosa, that it is best to go to the records of the church (if any) associated with the cemetery for a list of funeral services of those who were buried there. Good luck. 3. Hi Bob , Received this message from you, response from one I sent to 'burlingtonhistory. org'. I see it made it's way back to the expert in the area. How are you doing? As you see I'm still at the genealogy bit. I'm still looking for info on Samuel J. Payne and Priscilla Hoyt burial sites. I'm almost positive they died in the Mukwanago/Honey Creek area. I was just looking for any local publications on those areas for a clue of their whereabouts. Barb's brother Art died since I last talked to you, not sure if you knew him. If you ever run across my people please let me know, more than willing to pay the costs, just let me know. 2. Don't know which book you are referring to so can't answer about that. It may be the same book that I found Fohey's in. It is a History of Milwaukee by the Western Historical Publishing Company. It is found on Pae 1229 though. It is a biography listing the following: Fred Fohey, George D. Fohey, Michael Fohey, Mrs. Michael Fohey nee Ann Ebbs and Thomas J. Fohey. If this is of interest to you let me know. I deal with the original book of history but it has been since republished as a two volume set because of size (my access one is over 1660 pages in length). The Pg. 318 may now be in the newer 2nd volume. Let me know and I will see what I can do. If it is a short biography I can type the contents to you in an e-mail. If it is a longer one I would have to photocopy it at the historic cemetery of Milwaukee, Forest Home Cemetery, where I volunteer every Friday to look up information for people. They are the owners of the volume and was a personal copy of a leader in Milwaukee history, George Dousman. His signature is on the inside front cover. If it has to be photocopied and mailed, though, the cemetery does charge a $1.00 fee to cover copying, paper, envelope and postage and I do have to receive that first because of the many dead-beats who have stiffed the cemetery in the past for this service. Let me know. Better if immediately as tomorrow is the day I do the volunteering; otherwise, you will have to wait an additional week before you can get an answer from me. Bob of Brookfield
