Fryer was born in Cold Spring, Jefferson county, Wisconsin on 11 February 1850, the son of Nelson and Lucinda (Miller) Fryer. John H. Fryer was one of four children, all living yet in 1912. John H. Fryer married in 1878 to Alma Williams. Alma died in 1884 and in 1886 John H. Fryer married Louisa H. Loucks.
