Walter J. Powell, Sr., 57, suffered a fatal coronary attack on Friday, July 4, at his home at 205 N. Park Street, Whitewater. He and his family were in the process of moving across the street into his childhood home. Born March 26, 1918, in Milwaukee, he was the son of Walter and Lillian Keller Powell, and had lived in Whitewater most of his life. He graduated from the former Whitewater College High School, earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and served as a Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, during World War II, graduating from the Graduate School of Naval Architecture, Annapolis, Maryland. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations, Madison, where he was the assistant chief engineer of the safety and building division. Powell was married January 27, 1943, in Rockport, Texas, to Gladys Dickinson, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Whitewater, Professional Engineers and a former city school band member. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Walter, Jr., Houston, Texas; and Robert, at home; on sister, Mrs. Marguerite Asher, Royal Oak, Michigan; and one grandson. Services were Monday, July 7, at 2 p.m. from the First United Methodist Chapel, the Reverend David Kruse officiating, with burial in Hillside Cemetery. Friends called Sunday from 3-8 p.m. at the Hickey-Kent Funeral Home.
