SMITH HARLEY FLVEL SMITH died Tuesday morning, 24 inst., in the 82d year of his age. He was the oldest son of RICHARD and SARAH WHITE SMITH, and was born in Windham Co., Vermont Sept. 28, 1808. He received a classical education and for some time earned his bread as a tutor in Greek, Latin and mathematics. He studied law at Saratoga, and in 1838 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court. After some years residence in Western New York he came first to Chicago and a little later to Elkhorn, in 1850. He had married LYDIA ANN NOURSE of his native country, in 1833, who died in 1851 (correction 1881). Their daughter, MISS NETTIE SMITH, whose own bright high hopeful career was frustrated almost at its outset by an all but fatal accident, has since administered her father's domestic affairs and comforted his slowly declining years. MR. SMITH was one in whom a love of justice and fair play was a primary instinct, and whose compassion for the unfortunate might be taken for granted. To detect oppression and meanness was for him, to hate it and he was so endowed by nature and equipped by his studies that neither tyranny nor meanness could deceive him by any fair seeming. He was one of the interllectual ornaments of our village, his mind well furnished by professional study, and by a wide range of sound reading, and all on the foundation of a liberal and thorough education. He was not a money-maker, but always found himself able to deal justly, and with his poorer neighbor generously, and to place himself in the front rank of our public spirited men. He always loved and believed in Elkhorn, and he deserves to be held in kindly and respectful remembrance by the citizens of Elkhorn. =============================================
