Order on line & then do follow-up with signed paper as it says to do. The records are free. They come very quickly too! Request the DD-214, which is the military "official" papers. In the notes area - also ask for medical records, too - you won't get them automatically. Through those records - you can follow where he was, and then look in WWI history sites to find out what was going on at that time in that place. I did research for a man who found there was a book written on his father's military unit, and with the records, he could tell when his father, although not specifically mentioned, was in the story. Also, you will probably see things like height & weight changes, as men changed from 18-20 years old. One I researched grew from 5'7' to 5'9" in 2 years! Good luck!
