My guess is that she might be a widow or gotten divorced. If he was pretty crummy, she might use her maiden name and call the daughters that name. Since a father is never mentioned, a divorce might be likely. Try tracing the family to see when they moved, that will give you locations to look for info. Try finding a birth certificate (not required until after 1928-9 or so) for either daughter. A daughter's marriage certificate may name a father. If Muriel (or Katherine) knew who their father was, it may be on their birth certificates, or marriage certificate. Check with descendants of Esthers siblings - sisters especially knew/know the family "gossip" and they may have told their children, whose descendants may be able to tell you about it. I have tried for months to find out Elvira's maiden name...Hopefully I can get back to her origins...Ireland, England, etc. Can you help me on the George Clinton family of same county...and earlier of Crawford County or should I post a new message? I know quite alot of information except that Esther E. Clinton, daughter of Esther and George Clinton is listed in later years as Mrs. Esther E. Clinton, mother of Muriel Kirk Clinton and Kathryn Clinton...(Muriel was my grandmother)...was she married to another Clinton??? or an unmarried mother. It seems strange to me that George Clinton a very strict Presbyterian would condone one illigitamacy much less two?...Muriel was born in Chicago but returned to the Honey Creek, Spring Prairie area in her girlhood and stayed with her Aunts Catherine and Anne...her mother fades in and out of the picture but a father is never mentioned. On the cemetery database I have, I show a Daniel Woodard buried in Darien Cemetery, Darien. Being there I do not have quick access to the newspaper for that area for that time frame. My work load is much lighter in the summer & that is when I will spend some time traveling to the different spots around the county.
