Wisconsin at the time of William's death in l853. Their daughter Maryann Caroline Marshall was married to W B Coman about 1848. They were listed at Clinton in the l850 census. Walter's parents, Allen and Eunice Coman lived at La Fayette twp at the same time. The Marshall family had come from England some years earlier. Family stories tell that William had met Mary on a wagon train of English immegrants traveling west. I am looking for any information on the Marshall family and their descendants and hope to learn where Hudson was located and where they might have been buried. They had five children before Karen died, around 1848. By the 1850 U.S. Census, Vetle lived with his second wife, Marthe Halvorsdatter, in LaGrange township, Walworth. His name was spelled "Wattely Thurstin" by the enumerator. LaGrange was home to the Norwegian settlement called Skoponong, as well as Heart Prairie and Round Prairie. I know that some of Karen's siblings lived at the Skoponong settlement. By 1853, most (including Vetle and Karen and children) moved west to Winneshiek County, Iowa, just south of Decorah. My question is this: Does anybody know where the Lutheran records are kept for ANY nearby (Walworth/Jefferson counties) Norwegian settlement during the 1843-1850 time period? Lutheran church records for Skoponong only begin in 1850 (before Karen died). Koshkonong records (according to the LDS Family Search site) exist from 1844 onward. But where are these kept? Would the Koshkonong records include the Skoponong records? Whom do I write/e-mail/call? It makes sense that my ancestors would live around Karen's siblings in LaGrange or Whitewater in Walworth. I don't believe they lived at Koshkonong settlement in Jefferson county...although I can't completely rule it out. So my focus is on LaGrange and Whitewater townships. By the way, I purchased Fred Kraege's "LaGrange Township Cemeteries," and my ancestors' names are not included...I know that their grave markers are likely lost, so they would not be mentioned in the three cemeteries of LaGrange. But I need to know if there are Lutheran church records for the time period I mentioned above. Many thanks to anybody who might be able to steer me in the right direction. Sincerely, Jan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My mother was their oldest child, Betty Jane Wiley and married Francis Olsen in Whitewater in 1944. I'm their oldest child -- Barbara Olsen Walker. None of the tricks worked to find them anyplace. Maybe they were missed or were away from home. Alexander owned his home in 1910 and 1930 so he should have been there! Alexander and Rose are buried there in Whitewater in Hillside cemetery. Laura Wiley is living there in 1930, just as you said. The only other suggestion I can thing of is to email our Area Research Center in Whitewater, located in the Anderson Library Room at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Ask if they have the listing of the Whitewater graduates or if they know where you could try to find a listing in the 1918-1921 era. Their email is archives@uww.edu Their phone is 262-472-5520 and hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. week-days. Area Research Centers are set up by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. My gg grandparents Michael Byrne (1806-1873)and Bridget Ball (1819-1872) came from Salterstown, County Louth, to Walworth County in 1848. Their daughter Bridget Byrne (1852-1918) married Patrick Madden (1850-1932). Bridget Byrne/Patrick Madden's son John Madden (1872-1929) married Bridget McCabe. This Bridget would obviously be a different generation than the one you're looking for, but the Salterstown/Walworth connection is significant so lineage is likely the same. Gravestone inscriptions from Salterstown (Journal of County Louth Archeological and Historical Society): "IHS here lies the remains of Thomas Toner of Salterstown who depart'd this life the 10th of Decr 1774 aged 43 yrs. Also his wife Catherine Lawless who died the 5th of Novr 1794 aged 75 yrs. Also Andrew Toner who died AD 1762 aged 5 years." Families whose child died young frequently gave a later child the same name. I hope this helps - I have more about the ! Byrne and Madden families in WI, and other headstone inscriptions in Salterstown. There are quite a few families who came from Salterstown to Walworth Co. And I'd like to know what you have. My computer has been gone 8 days, and I just got it back today. Now I can't get on-line, something is goofed up. So I will type this reply and it will probably sit here till I find some "help"! Anyway, the courthouse doesn't have divorce records there. They have all been sent to an Area Research Center. I used to be able to check the index file, but now we can't go into that section with all the security stuff. Being Wisconsin didn't become a state till 1848, and most of the townships in the county weren't formed till around 1836 in Wisconsin territory, I just don't think there were early records like that. Marriages were about the only record I've found before 1850.
