Author: brendaduka Surnames: LIKENS DUKA ERICKSON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.walworth/711.65/mb.ashx Message Board Post: WOW! I hope you can help. I am looking for info on my Grandmother. She was born 1896 in Moline, Il as Helen Erickson. Adopted soon after by Fremont & Mary Likens. Renamed Eva Likens. 1900 lived in Ogle Cty Ill. 1910 Elkhorn Wi. I contacted Elkhorn Area HS and they looked in a book and found her name in a graduating class 1916. I asked if they could find a photo (really need a photo of her as none exist) they said they get back to me and never did. Wrote the admin and never rcvd a reply. Mary Likens died in 1918. Would like an obit if one exists. 1920 Eva is in Elkhorn living in a hotel as a waitress, Fremont (Fred) lives not too far. I've requested a death cert from the State & Walworth Cty but they have no record for Fremont Likens. He simply disappeared. Soon after Eva moved to Illinois and changed her name back to Helen Erickson after reuniting with her birth mother. Married in 1923 Lake Cty Illinois. Died 1932. I suspect much info sits in Walworth County - especially the! high school. Helen/Eva was well educated. She was the Likens only child. If you can help I would be eternally grateful. I became aqauinted with a Coman in Grand Rapids last spring and he said that he had helped to edit the book for the previous year. I found it online after purchasing it as soon as it came out. The editor put me in touch with the author and I am attenpting to fill her in on the Wisconsin Comans. I have just spent two years full time researching my grandfather's ancestry which include the Comans and Marshalls through his mother, Alice Coman Mathewson. May I ask if you have a Coman or Marshall commection. I would be pleased to hear from you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My dad (Donald Richter)has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and we want to know if it is in our heritage. My great grandmother's name was Gertrude (nee Krift) Richter. She had a number of children but Sylvester would be my grandfather and my father's father. I know that Gertrude was born 11/1868 and died 06/22/1934. She was married to Alphons Richter and the daughter of Francis and Anna Marie Krift. They were in the Burlington area for years and that is where I found the info I know so far. Any information you could possibly find would be SO appreciated. Thank you, Valerie Austgen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ShirleySisk77 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.walworth/2422.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: We did not have a TB Sanitarium in Walworth County that I know of, but there were two nearby, one in Janesville, Rock county and one maybe in Waukesha county or close, can't quite remember right now. I have an article on it that I could find with the name, location and when it operated. If you're interested for more data, let me know. We did have a Poor Farm/House in Walworth county with an insane asylum in a separate building. It was located in Section 4 of the Town of Geneva. Walworth County started purchasing land and building a place for their poor, paupers and insane in 1852-3. The first buildings were wood and burned, and were replaced by brick buildings. I also have some data on those with a few pictures of some of the inmates and buildings. You mention the Ives name in your listing. Which Ives? I have some data on the Ives family in Walworth county plus a couple of Ives are buried just a few blocks from where I live, and a few in the next town from me. Author: PRegan2521 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.walworth/2422.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Yes there was an Asylum at Elkhorn WI (nr Lk Geneva). If you go to the URL there is a Newspaper Article that was written about the asylum in Elkhorn WI and the area that it covered. This article will probably only be available a short time and you might want to download and print it. http://theweekextra.com/news/0806/080306annex.html I would suggest that for accurate information regarding the asylum you contact the Walworth County Historical Society by Snail Mail as you note they specifically state "to write" (as most Archives want) and request the information that they have at their Archives regarding 1920. If you had an Ancestor you believe D there you might want to write the Elkhorn Village Clerk (stating the exact DOD or close Date) and request a Death Certificate or Contact the Walworth County Clerk, P.O. Box 1001, Elkhorn, WI 53121. I have had excellent results in obtaining Walworth County WI information on my Ancestors via Snail Mail and writing to the various Archives and sources. Good Luck Pat R . Marshall Coman. Mary's parents, William and Jane Marshall lived in Walworth Co, Wisconsin at Hudson at the time of William Sr's death in l853. William had left his possessions to Jane upon his death and then to his six sons and three daughters as well as a niece, Mary Ann Redford. Unfortunately, he did not list the children by name, however, his son, Samuel Marshall was listed in the probate papers. The Marshall family came to Wisconsin from England through New York City as his will had been written and witnessed there. They were in Walworth Co by at least 1848 as that is about when Maryann and Walter married. They were listed in the Clinton, Rock Co. 1850 census and about two years later were living in LaCrosse Co at the time of William's death.
