Your work is amazing. Don't want to belabor this, but figured out one of the problems I'm having in finding these people. I use Heritage Quest, through my public library, for the U.S. Census. I decided to find Charles Harms, as you had, in Lyons, Walworth County in the 1900 Census. After trying every spelling of the name Harms without success, I went through Lyons, page by page, line by line, until I found him. Heritage Quest had indexed him as "Harris," and if you look at the original census page, you can see how this happened. I have experienced this before, and it is tedious and hard on the eyes, etc., and you have to know the location. (In this case, I would never have guessed that the Harms family had moved to Lyons.) I know you have Ancestry.com, but they are terribly expensive, and I'm on a fixed income. Do you think they are really worth the subscription?? Many thanks for your research and all your advice. Author: ShirleySisk77 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.walworth/2443.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found some information on a couple of Benjamin Clark names in Walworth county, not sure if one of these is the right one or not. There is a Benjamin Clark born 10 Nov. 1805 and died 27 July 1864 with a wife, Cornelia Clark born 15 Sept. 1805 and died 16 May 1891 buried in the Brick Church cemetery, Walworth township, Walworth county, Wisconsin. One of their sons, Henry, born 1829 and Henry's wife, Abigail, are buried next to Benjamin and Cornelia. Benjamin Clark was a supervisor in the Town of Walworth in 1853, 54, 55 and 1860, as listed in the county history. This same Benjamin is listed in the 1850 census, as age 45,born Rhode Island, with wife, Cornelia, and six children ages 6 to 19 living in Walworth township. There is a Benjamin F. Clark in Walworth township in the 1850 census, age 14, born NY, son of Henry Clark, a physician, born Rhode Island about 1794 and his wife Lorinda. There is a Benjamin Clark in the town of Richmond listed in county history who was a clerk in 1867, the treasurer in 1869 and supervisor in 1870 and 71 in the town of Richmond, Walworth county, Wisconsin. There isn't a middle initial for the two Benjamin Clark guys listed, so I don't know if either of these is the right one to be Benjamin Trotter Clark. Maybe these are enough clues for you to figure it out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I look for siblings, and other things that can connect when I find a definite connection. I also look at who is living nearby. Before cars, most people married people that lived within 10 miles, often meeting at church, which was where social events took place. Draft cards can be a huge help also. Then I use a search engine (www.google.com) to find anything that isn't on Ancestry or a similar genealogy. There are lots of things out there, they just take weird digging, and trying lots of different spellings. Nothing beats going in person, but I have had great success with Historical Societies - often for very little cost. Volunteers know right where to look, and how to search their particular files. *********** To recap - here is what we know about Charles Harm & Louisa. They get a lot of data from combing posted info, which is only as reliable as who put it on. Some transcriptions are much better, but again, a "1873" may simply be a typo and should be "1863". Still, it can give lots of clues to follow up on, including the actual documents if they are available. Microfilm of originals are better than transcriptions, if available, since you can decipher for yourself if needed. A church may no longer exist, but it's records probably went ot a "sister" church locally, or may reside in a denomination's national historical records. A "German Methodsist" may have it's records in a local "Methodist" church, so you might want to start with the ones closest to where the actual church was, and find a Methodist church nearby. Sometimes the individual church website might mention that it was a branch of, or moved from, or was originally..... County historical societies often have that info too. I'm having such great success with Carl and Friedericka Malsch, I'm wondering if I might ask you for help with Friedericka's brother, Charles Harme/Harms/Harmes. According to the 1880 Census, Charles married a woman named Lowenia. In trying to find this marriage, I found a FamilySearch IGI record for a Carl Harms marriage to a Louisa Dorothea Helena Schulz in Walworth WI in 1872. (Again, the date is a bit off, as it was for Karl and Friedericka Malsch, but I'm wondering if this is due to a delay by the small rural churches in making their reports. Fredericka's and Charles' stepfather, Christian Pagel was the minister for the Wheatland German Methodist Church, which I understand doesn't exist anymore.) This FamilySearch record is encouraging because it notes Charles/Carl Harms parents names, so I think I'm getting closer to finding my gg grandmother's maiden name. Many, many thanks for any help you can give me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Try the German Methodist Church to see if they have any records - baptisms, church records on anniversaries, etc. If their children were baptised there, they probably have some family history there as well. Looks like you can get inter-library loans of the newspapers that have these items as well - so may be worth it to read the articles in full. If you follow the census records, you can get the children of Carl & Frederika, and then the grandchildren. WWII records, then SSDI, then google names, you can probably locate living descendants. Do you have access to census records? Also helpful is: http://www.privateeye.com You can use the free portions to see where people are located, then google them and use Ancestry people search. Saxony Williminna matches Minnie in 1880, also Minne Robinson This would mean that Frederika & Carl were married at least by 1870 census, and given closeness of ages of children, probably 1875 or so. No wording on who Ann & Hambush are, but possibly parents of either, although listed with same last name as rest of family. Does not fit "Bariba, age 77" listed as Mother in 1880, although might be mother in law or step mother. **************** 1870 also in Hudson, Lyons, Walworth, WI Malsch/Malch Frederick, 38 Christina, 30 William, 9 Mary, 5 all b. Friedrich Carl might also be known as Carl Freidrich, Freidrich might be shortened to Fried, Fred or Ferd. Ask how they are arragned in the plot(s) as that can help you determine relationships. There weren't photos on the page itself. Contact the cemetery directly, as they often have more info in their death & burial records. In some cemeteries, they have as much info as a death certificate. THey may have funeral home info as well, and you can see if there is info there. Bariba might be Barbara (Barbara & Sabastian went ot WI together), and Elizabeth might be proper or middle name. You will want to look at the tombstone photos and asssess which are together, and some dates that were hard to read. Sabastians & Elisabeths stones seem to be much more recent stones - could be that they were added much later by a descendant. They don't fit a 1881 timeframe stone. ************ Hope this helps!
