They started in the 1850's but there are only a handful recorded that early, they begin to pick up in 1872. If she was married or died here let me know (I didn't think to look), they often put info like place of birth, parents names & their place of birth, etc.on those records as well. ~Georgia

Genoa City as its now called was where the 2 main railroad lines crossed in this area. It's right on the IL border (within blocks) so she could have been filed with McHenry Co,IL - worth a try I think. If you know where they were married (I didn't think to look here), that may list more family info also. Let me know if I can help further. ~Georgia

Rebecca Walker died in March, 1872 and George R Walker died in March, 1873. They were both buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee in a family plot. I am wondering if there might be a mention of them, or an obit in a local or county newspaper, or death records at county level, as they were the parents of two prominent Wisconsin politicians. One son, George H Walker was a founder of and later Mayor of Milwakee in 1853. Another son, Isaac P Walker was US Senator for Wisconsin 1848-1855. I have a copy of the 1870 US Census for Whitewater, Walworth County, listing George Walker, 87, and Rebecca, 90, living alone. thank you for your time and efforts, Mike Glenn
Hello, I am new to the list although I have been researching GODFREYs in Walworth County for several years. Is anyone available to check headstone inscriptions in Oak Grove Cemetery? There's a James Godfrey b. 1820 buried among other Godfreys there; I can't figure out how he fits in with the rest. Other questions: On the Oak Grove Cemetery burial list I have, the first column has names, the second column has numbers like 4-29 or 9-13--are these plot locations? The last column has a series I can't figure out: like C-x or C-Lib-x. Does anyone have any ideas about those codes? Thank you, Susi Godfrey

Lewis, born July 1890 in Wisconsin. She is not with a Lewis family, rather listed as a "boarder" to Plube Wheeler widow age 63 from New Jersey. Listed parents as being born in New York. Wondering if this is a link... Because she's not listed as a relative, so that's strange for a 9 year old.

I know adoption and that long ago will be a huge challenge. If that could be found it may be the icing on the cake. And if we get that far, the cooperation of the state of Wisconsin opening adoption records. Oh boy what a long journey for sure. I do know she was buried in Beliot, Wi.. Keep in mind she was married twice John Henry Gors and then Jordon (or variation of such). There are Gors in Walworth still from what I have seen here online. You are so correct and I did not mean to leave out the possiblilty of the Potawatamee and many of them were moved out of the area as well. They with the chippewa moved the Sioux out of the region west from my understanding. Some times the brain moves faster than the fingers here online :-). We are just wrapping up the other side of this family and we always knew we had Cherokee on that side. Will be recieving information from the Cherokee Nation office of tribal affiars this week to finalize the heritage and tribal affiliation.Being a powwow Northern Traditional dancer this has always been my journey to find and bring together the past. We were forutnate not to have to deal with adoptions on this side of the heritage. Now we move forward on Mae Henrietta Lewis on the paternal side of the same family. Well, my fingers are crossed here..I know it really is a shot in the dark but one never knows. I will be in DC in a few weeks on business and I plan to spend a few extra days by going to the National Archives and furthering this search as well. If I find anything will let you know. Again, Thank you for trying. Lee

I will give it a try and see if there is any info on her. I can tell you that if she was born in Fontana, then she would not be Sioux or Chippewa. The ONLY Tribe in this area at the time was the Potawatamie tribe. The chief's name was "Big Foot" (not a joke). They were peaceful, more than other tribes, and thus were the last tribe to be relocated.

I am searching the information on my great grandmother Mae Henreetta (sp) Lewis 1875-1895 sorry about the big gap. Mae Lewis was adopted from a reservation or so the story goes. It's told that she was full Sioux (after research could be Chippewa or a few of the others prominent in the area). but as the story goes Sioux. She was born and or adopted in Fontana ( or there abouts) Walworth County,Wi. She was Married to John Henry Gors and lived in McHenry County. She was also married last Jordon or similar spelling. I am looking for the roots of her adoption and the family name to hopefully unchain this web. Thank you in advance if you should you dare to crack this one open. Im sure it will be a great challenge. Thanks, Lee
