Tracing the Wittig Family I am in my late fifties and during the course of my life I have come across very few people with the last name of Wittig. I began trying to trace my roots about a year ago as did my cousin, Eric Wittig, who now lives in CA. He did a lot of the research but there are still gaps. My grand father, Paul Wittig (DOB 8/21/1871) - (DOD 3/21/1954) came with his wife My grandmother. Anna Marie Hoffman (DOB 9/24/1870) - (DOD 1931) to America on May 7, 1907. The arrived on a ship named the Bluecher in New York. My cousin was able to get a copy of the ships log. They came from Germany the city of Leppersdorf, the providence of Landerschutz. They had four boys Max (age 10), Erich (age 6), Helmut (age 5) and Willi (my father, age 4). They settled in Newark, NJ. My grandfather was a baker and owned his bake shop. A man name Carl Wise of 15th Street in Newark, NJ is listed as their sponcer or contact. We do not know who Mr. Wiss was. My grandfather was a swimming instructor and a street car conductor in Germany. When they came to America they lived at 420 Springfield Ave. Newark, NJ. My father William Wittig worked as a machanist for American Can Co. for 25 years and then General Electric until he retired. We grew up in Irvington, NJ - on Myrtle Ave. My Mother Anna was a homekeeper but also worked for others cleaning their homes. I work as mental health therapist and live in Virginia. My sister Joan Flanagan lives in Iselin, NJ and is a travel agent. My sister Ann Marie Power lives in Manasquan, NJ. My Uncle Eric and his wife Catherine lived In Kearny, NJ. He worked in at Hyatt Bearing a Division of General; Motors in Harrison, NJ. He also owned a service station on Greenwood Ave. in East Orange, NJ during the 1930s. They had one son Eric, who now lives in CA., is retired and worked in computers. My Uncle Elmer (Helmut) who is in his nineties lived with his wife Bernadine (deceased) in Linden, NJ. They had one son, Paul. Paul continues to live in NJ. My Uncle Max and his wife Hedwig (both deceased) had a son Erwin and a daughter Ruth, they also lived in Irvington. They now live in Florida. Trying to piece together ones history is very rewarding but it also raises questions. I would like to know who Carl Weiss was, the person listed as the contact for my parents when they arrived in America. I'd love to know the reason they came to America, why did they leave Germany and come to this country? Who were my grandparents parents.?
