She taught English 1 and 2 and dramatics in Hudson High School from 1935 to 1939. While in Hudson she roomed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Harding on Sixth Street. Helen Selle was born in Milwaukee, March 25, 1912, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Selle. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned a bachelor of science degree. At the university, she was a close friend of Dorothy Nagel of Hudson, the daughter of the late Emil and Mabel Nagel. She left Hudson to marry Paul Bay in Copenhagen, Denmark, Aug. 4, 1939, and remained there for the entire German occupation of Denmark during World War II. After the war, she and her small daughter returned to Milwaukee and she resumed teaching. She later married John Fairbairn. In 1986, at the prodding of family and friends, she wrote a memoir entitled “The King Grants Permission and other True Stories” that detailed her experiences in Denmark during the German occupation. She remained the rest of her life in Milwaukee where she taught grade and high school students. She returned to Hudson, June 15, 1993, to renew old acquaintances at a luncheon at the Hudson House where 40 of her former students and associates gathered to greet her. For the past few years, she has lived at the Milwaukee Protestant Home. She died Nov. 29, 2003, after a brief illness. Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth (Charles) Miller of Fond du Lac; and two grandchildren, Erika and Christopher Miller. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Carl Selle. A memorial service is planned. Memorials were suggested to St. Marcus Lutheran Church, 22215 N. Palmer St., Milwaukee. © 2004 Hudson Star-Observer - Reposted by permission http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=11525&SectionID=3&SubSectionID=54&S=1
