He was born Oct. 23, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Earl and Lavonne (Carter) Higens, and was raised in the Des Moines area, attending school in West Des Moines. As a young man, he served in the United States Marine Corps. On May 7, 1954, in Des Moines, he was married to Betty Cannon. He enjoyed his family, farming, hunting, bingo and trips to the casino. For 25 years he was a production manager at Knappen Molasses Factory in Iowa and then he and his family moved to Baldwin, where they owned and operated a dairy farm. Later the family moved to the Spring Valley/Elmwood area for six years while he was employed at the Red Barn convenience store. For the past 10 years they have lived in Hudson. Surviving are his wife, Betty of Hudson; a son, Gary (Angie) Higens of St. Paul; four daughters, Linda (Bern) Asher of Elmwood, Terri (Scott) Asher of Menomonie, Mary Higens (Chris Westerman) of Hudson and Robin Baron (Corey Gibson) of Eau Galle; 14 grandchildren, Melanie Wimmer, Adam Carlton, Leslie Welliver, Gary Carlton Jr., Samantha Carlton, Rachel Carlton, Jamie Krier, Alvis Krier, Jason Baron, Jake Baron, Alesha Lamphier, Ricky Mattson, Erik Asher and Ashley Solum; nine great-grandchildren, Kirsten Wimmer, Emily Wimmer, Devon, Caleb and Lucas Carlton, Elicia and Hayden Carlton, Madison Krier and Dominick Stayberg. A memorial service was at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Dennis Nelson of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating.
