She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Patrick J. and Mary (Malley) Scoles and the granddaughter of Irish immigrants. Her mother died at a young age, and Geraldine was raised by an aunt in St. Paul. On June 27, 1940, in St. Paul, she was married to a young law student, Lawrence P. Gherty, a native of the Emerald-Erin Prairie area of St. Croix County. Her husband received his law degree in 1942 from the St. Paul College of Law, and then received an appointment as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served in Birmingham, Ala., New York City, Chicago and St. Paul. She and her husband came to Hudson in 1946 when he opened his practice of law which he continued until the time of his death, April 8, 1980. He also served as St. Croix County judge in the 1960s. His law practice is continued in the present firm of Gherty and Gherty, by his two sons, Terrence Gherty and Mark Gherty and daughter-in-law, Susan Schleif Gherty. Gerry Gherty was a widow for more than 10 years when she married Edward J. Quillin, Dec. 29, 1990, and moved to La Crosse. He died Oct. 15, 2002 and she returned to Hudson in Nov. 2003 to make her home at WinterGreen Apartments. Surviving are three sons, Lawrence P. (Eaine) Gherty Jr., of Woodbury, Minn., Terrence M. (Susan Schleif) Gherty and Mark J. (Maeta McKenzie) Gherty both of Hudson; four daughters, Barbara A. (Maurice) Moore of Eugene, Ore., Joan M. “Joni” (Douglas) Henningsen of Isle, Minn., Mary E. (Arthur R. Lehman) Gherty of New York, N.Y., and Maureen R. (Christopher) Tuggle of Ames, Iowa; three stepsons, Phil (Barbara) Quillin, Lyle (Sandy) Quillin and Larry (Barbara) Quillin, all of La Crosse; two sisters, Kathleen Kyle of St. Paul and Marian (Larry) Ruhde of Marshfield; a brother, Patrick J. Scoles of Maplewood, Minn. There are 16 grandchildren, Kelly (Julius) Butler, Dawn, Becky, Courtney, Katie, Michael, Collin, and Megan Gherty, David (Amy) Moore, Kevin Moore, Tod (Bridget) Henningsen, Charles Lehman, and Laurel, Hannah, Ben, Madison Tuggle and one great-grandchild, Nolan Butler. Preceding her in death, beside her parents and two husbands, are grandchildren, Christine Gherty in 1970, and Lawrence Gherty III in 1992 and a brother, Gordon Scoles. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., Monday, July 12 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson, with Fr. John Parr officiating. Music was provided by three granddaughters, Laurel and Hannah Tuggle, as a harp and violin duo, a vocal soloist Katie Gherty and the Hope Choir. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Hudson where casketbearers were Tod Henningsen, Michael Gherty, Collin Gherty, Charles Lehman, Ben Tuggle, and Phil, Lyle and Larry Quillin. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 11, and from 9 to 10: 30 a.m., Monday July 12 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.
