He was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Hammond, the son of Merle B. and Florence (Wurzinger) Medes, and attended school in Hammond. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Army. After his return from the military he was married to Margaret Ann Meistad in Gilmanton. The marriage would later end. He was employed for many years at Waldorf Paper Company in Minneapolis before entering the hardware business. He began his career with VandeBerg Hardware store in Baldwin and then with Gregerson’s Hardware, where he became the “go-to guy” for repairing broken screens, lawnmowers or bicycles. He retired in 1998 because of health reasons. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. Earlier in life, he enjoyed videotaping horse pulls and chatting on the citizens band radio where his handle was Red Fox. Surviving are three sons, Brian (Ericka) Medes of Austin, Minn., Keith (Tracy) Medes and Dean (Amy) Medes, both of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Faith, Shawn, Denise, Brianna, Taylor, Devin, and Emily; two sisters, Anna Mae Hennessey of Osceola and Marlene Eggen of Hudson; three brothers, Clifford (Bev) Medes of Hammond, William (Jean) Medes of Denver, Colo., and Gerald Medes of Baldwin. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, LeRoy Robert Medes, in 1967. The funeral is at 11a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond with Pastor Michael Briggs officiating. Burial is in the Hammond Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Baldwin American Legion Post No. 240. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred.
