He was born on March 28, 1920, in North Hudson, the son of John W. and Priscilla (Wright) Spencer. He was raised in the area and attended local schools, graduating from Hudson High School. On April 17, 1940, in St. Paul, he was married to Shirley Odell Zentzis. During World War II he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Asiatic- Pacific Theatre of War with the 38th Infantry Division and was awarded the Asiatic Ribbon with one Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. For many years he was a fuel deliveryman for the Standard Oil Company and was known for his friendly service and upbeat attitude. After his retirement from Standard Oil, he worked for a time at B&L Liquor Store in Houlton and then Sutler's Wines and Spirits in Stillwater. He was a lifetime member of the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2115 and Disabled American Veterans. Survivors are his three sons, David J. (Lila) Spencer, and Michael J. Spencer (Diane Hathaway) both of Hudson, and Donald G. Spencer of Oakdale, Minn.; five grandchildren, Dawn Spencer of Hudson, Theresa Spencer of New Richmond, Lisa Spencer of St. Paul, Tammy (Edward) Payton of River Falls and Carrie (Brian) DeLoy of Star Prairie; six great-grandchildren, Travis Spencer, Bailey and Miranda LaFavor, Zachary Glassing, Garrett and Courtney DeLoy. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Shirley Spencer on Jan. 10, 2002; two brothers, Marion Franklin Spencer in 1993 and Virgil Leroy Spencer in 1975, and two sisters, Ruby Clayton in 2003 and Viola L. Linnerooth in 1981. A memorial service was at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 8 at the O' Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson with Pastor Dr. Laurence R. Goebel officiating. Burial was in the Willow Cemetery in Hudson with full military honors presented by the Hudson VFW.
