She was the widow of the late Lloyd S. Gilbert, founder of the Gilbert Motors business in Hudson. She was born on Sept. 30, 1919, in St. Paul, the daughter of Walter L. and Victoria (Liberty) Tobin, and raised in the St. Croix Valley. On Jan. 18, 1939, she was married to Lloyd Scott Gilbert at St. John’s Church in St. Paul, Also in 1939 she and her husband owned and operated a feed mill (Hudson Elevator) and machinery business in Hudson. They began selling machinery and automobiles in 1948 in downtown Hudson and later moved the business to the “hill district” near I-94. The business, Gilbert Motors, was eventually passed on to their sons, L.G. and Donald. Today the business is called Denny Hecker’s Hudson Pontiac. Lucille was a dedicated volunteer for a number of organizations. She most recently was a volunteer at the historic Octagon House in Hudson, which is operated by the St. Croix County Historical Society. She was very much involved in the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, and in 1958 she was named the Scouter of the Year. She was also active as a coordinator for the American Field Service student exchange program in bringing foreign young people to attend high school here. She was instrumental in founding the North Hudson Pepper Festival. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing, knitting, golfing and traveling. Surviving are two sons, Donald D. (Carol) Gilbert of Hudson and Douglas J. (Nancy) Gilbert of Homewood, Ill.; a son-in-law, Joe Likover; six grandchildren, Kim Wanner, Brian Gilbert, Gini Izzard, Amiee Gilbert, Chad Gilbert and Jacob Likover; six great-grandchildren, Nicole, Jill and Stacey Wanner, Connor and Carlie Gilbert, and Isak Izzard; and a sister, Carol Jeanne (John) McDaniel of Hudson. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lloyd S., in 1998; a son, Lloyd George, in 2001; a daughter, Sharon Marie Likover, in 2001; and her brother, Howard A. Tobin, in 1984. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with burial in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
