He was born March 26, 1923, in Lake City, Minn., the son of Max and Anna (Vonderborne) Hirte. He grew up in Lake City and graduated from Lake City High School. As a young man, during World War II, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in the European Theatre of War. He was a decorated survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He has been a lifetime member of the Stillwater Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 323. For more than 37 years he was an employee of the Andersen Window Corporation in Bayport and he was a member of its Quarter Century Club. He was an avid hunter and a regular at the Hudson Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Frattalone Hirte; two daughters, Becky (Patrick) Lott of Detroit, Mich., and Debbie (Daniel) Asmus of Bayport; two sons, Terry (Ann) Hirte and Steven (Laurie) Hirte, both of Lakeland; four grandchildren, Heather Betz, Nathan and Shelly Asmus and Brian Delisle; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Cameron, Jaeden and Joseph; two sisters, Marcella Sloper of East Bethel, Minn., and Delores Wilkinson of Wyoming, Minn., and a brother, Delbert (Pat) Hirte of Minneapolis. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Mae Joyce (Miller) Hirte, in 1995; and his son, Jeffery Lee Hirte, in 1986. A memorial service was at noon Monday, July 19, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Michael Briggs officiating. Music was provided by organist Mary Post. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery in Lakeland with full military honors provided by the Stillwater Veterans of Foreign Wars.
