He was born June 13, 1911, in Somerset, the son of Ernest and Martha (Roettger) Ostendorf, and attended Landing Hill School in the town of Somerset. The oldest of four children, he helped his father cut wood to support the family and he and his father hauled the wood to Stillwater with a horse and wagon. In December of 1934 he was married to Lucille Ann Leisch, who died in 1952. He later married Marie Larsen on Aug. 16, 1958, in Denmark, Wis., and they made their home in Hudson. For many years he worked for the Burkhardt (Wis.) Co-operative as a driver and manager. Both he and his wife, Marie, retired in 1978. He was an enthusiastic baseball fan and in the 1940s and 1950s he played ball for the St. Croix County Tavern League. A memorable game in his baseball career occurred when he played against the famous Bud Grant, a Hall of Famer and Viking coach, and won! He also enjoyed hunting in the Danbury area, fishing for lake trout in Canada in May and playing cribbage, pinochle and bowling. Surviving are his wife, Marie; two sons, Richard H. “Dick” (Rose) Ostendorf of Hudson and Robert L. (Cindy) Ostendorf of North Hudson; two daughters, Donna Mae Seim and Geraldine Ann Waldroff, both of Hudson; 11 grandchildren Dale (Kris) Ostendorf, David (Chris) Ostendorf, Kristi Ostendorf, Vicki Ostendorf, Dennis (Jeanne) Ostendorf, Linda Jameson, Pat Cote, Lanette (Mike) Holland, Ruth Ann (Troy) Flaten, Nancy (Kevin) Frusher and Tara (Ilan) Boico; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris (Ralph) Sette of New Richmond. Preceding him in death besides his first wife, Lucille, in 1952 were his parents and two brothers, Raymond in 2002 and Wilbur. The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Christ Lutheran Church in Somerset with the Rev. Marilyn Thurber officiating. Music was provided by organist Kathy Brakke and vocalists Dennis and Mary Thorsen. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Somerset with grandchildren acting as casketbearers. A visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service at church Friday. Memorials are preferred to the Burkhardt Redeemer Lutheran Church Land Fund.
