She was born in Chicago Oct. 31, 1926, the daughter of Archibald J. and Marie (Cartony) Zarske, and grew up in the Stillwater area. After graduating from Stillwater High School, she attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul with a degree in occupational therapy. On Feb. 20, 1954, in Stillwater, she was married to Louis Garni Jr. They moved to Ely, where she established the occupational therapy department at the Ely Bloomenson Hospital and Nursing Home, where she worked until her retirement. Surviving are four daughters, Rena Garni of Minneapolis, Paula (George) Welte of Bemidji, Minn., Nina (Ken) Wise of North Oaks, Minn., and Beth Ann (Mark) Wagner of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Teri Waite, Christopher, Kelsey and Spencer Wise, and Matthew and Michelle Wagner; two cousins, Katy Cartony and Karyl Belknap; and a brother-in-law, Joe Garni. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Louis. A Memorial Mass was at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely, with the Rev. Fr. James Scheyer officiating.
