Hines, 96 Friday, November 19, 2004 James F. Hines, 96, of Hudson, formerly of Ellsworth and of Leigh, Fla., as a winter resident, died Saturday, Nov. 13. He was born Sept. 26, 1908, in Ellsworth, the son of Fred and Anna (Mallon) Hines, and was a 1926 graduate of Ellsworth High School. Following graduation he received his teaching certificate in 1927 and taught at a one-room school house for two years before entering the banking business. He began as a teller at the Citizens State Bank (now the First National Bank of Ellsworth) and worked his way up the ranks to become the bank vice-president, the position he held until his retirement in 1973. He met his future wife, Lolah Guenter, when he was working at the East Ellsworth Bank where she would bring in deposits from her family’s grocery store. They were married July 29, 1940, in Ellsworth. He was instrumental in the development and building of the Ellsworth County Club’s golf course that opened in 1963. He was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he did the church financial operations for many years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golf, fishing on family vacations at Balsam Lake and was an avid gardener. He cherished being with his wife, Lolah, and his family. Surviving are his three children, Gary (Jean) Hines of North Hudson, Jeanine (Paul) Marlin of Quincy, Ill., and Janelle (Bob) Hill of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren, Tara (Todd) Patet of Maplewood, Minn., Bretta Hines of La Crosse, Jessalyn Hines of Hudson, Kevin (Nicole) Marlin and Diann Marlin, both of Denver, Colo., Yvonne Marlin of Hurricane, Utah, Renee Hill of St. Paul and Natalie Hill of Minneapolis; and five great grandchildren, Matthew, Emma, Cali, Izabella and Sydney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lolah Hines, on March 13; and a sister, Virgil Pulling. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth, with visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery where pallbearers were Gary Hines, Bob Hill, Fred Pulling, Kevin Marlin, Todd Patet and Paul Marlin. Memorials are preferred to the Mercy Medical Missions, Attn: Dr. Karen Schneider, RMS, 104 Woodlawn Road, Baltimore MD 21210.
