He was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Baldwin, the son of Peter and Esther (Anderson) VanSomeren. He attended the Baldwin Christian School prior to graduating from the Baldwin High School in 1957. He furthered his education when he received a teaching degree from the Wisconsin State College (now University of Wisconsin) in River Falls. He began his long career as an educator in 1961 when he started teaching at Washington Junior High in Racine followed by a position at Central Christian High School in Prinsburg, Minn. On Aug. 9, 1963, at the Christian Reformed Church in Racine, he was married to Dolores Mae DeYong. As a couple, they moved to Baldwin, where he taught sciences, physics and chemistry for 30 years at the Baldwin High School. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church, serving on the church council and teaching Sunday School. He also served as past president of the Baldwin-Woodville Education Association and directed the Wisconsin Education Yearbook Association. Survivors are his wife, Dolores; four children, Elaine (Randall) Obbink and Janel VanSomeren, both of Monroe, Wash., Jeff (Laurel) VanSomeren of Hudson and Shareen Kamp of Woodbury, Minn.; five grandchildren, Joelle Kamp, Alex VanSomeren, Thomas Kamp, Sydney Obbink and Christopher VanSomeren; three brothers, Bernard (Gertrude) VanSomeren of Hudsonville, Mich., Anthony VanSomeren of Baldwin and Richard (Carol) VanSomeren of Baldwin; a sister, Marie (Harold) Zoerhof of Holland, Mich.; and two sisters-in-law, Myra VanSomeren of Baldwin and Wilma (John) VanSomeren-Stodt of Baldwin. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son-in-law, John Kamp; two brothers, George VanSomeren and Lawrence VanSomeren; and a sister-in-law, Helen VanSomeren. The funeral was at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at the Christian Reformed Church in Baldwin with Pastor Bryce Mensink officiating. Organist Rachel VanSomeren accompanied the singing of Steve Rens. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery where casketbearers were Jerry VanSomeren, Duane VanSomeren, Steve VanSomeren, Roger VanSomeren, Allen VanSomeren and Dan Berrevoets. Memorials are preferred.
