Bertelsen, 92 Wednesday, July 21, 2004 Jacob Urban “Jake” Bertelsen, 92, of Hammond, and a former resident of North Hudson, died Wednesday, July 14, at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond, where he had resided since November 2003. Born Oct. 11, 1911, in Fredrikshavn, Denmark, he was the son of Christian and Hilda (Koch) Bertelsen, who immigrated to the United States in about 1917, settling eventually in St. Paul. He was raised in St. Paul and attended school there. During World War II, he enlisted in St. Paul on Sept. 10, 1943, in the U.S. Navy and served until Feb. 16, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. On Oct. 21, 1939, at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Paul, he was married to Hazel Genevieve Hansen. For a number of years during the 1950s and 1960s, he and his brother, Arved, operated the Overshoe Club Bar at 304 Second St. in Hudson. Later he was employed by the Hudson Water Department more than 10 years, retiring in December 1976. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and loved horses. Surviving is a sister, Betty Ronning of St. Paul, and a number of nieces and nephews, including Chris Bertelsen of New Richmond, Gary Bertelsen of Columbus, Ohio, and former football great, James “Jim” Bertelsen of Austin, Texas. Preceding him in death, besides his parents and his wife, Hazel, in 2003, are three brothers, Arved, Peter and Chris Bertelsen, and four sisters, Ella Polodichuck, Anna Norum, Dagney Priebe and Ethel Myers. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Dennis Nelson officiating. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery, where family members served as casketbearers.
