He was born June 23, 1917, the son of John and Elizabeth (Mundt) Kempf in Stillwater. As a young man he worked for various farmers, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Corp. for a short time and then for the shoe company in Stillwater for 18 years. In 1947 he began working for the railroad and retired in 1962. In 1960 he moved to a farm in Roberts. He enjoyed music, socializing, playing cards and dancing. He also sang in the church choir and played the saxophone with a concertina orchestra. He had been a 4-H club leader and avid wood worker, and as recently as this year displayed items at the St. Croix County Fair and the Wisconsin State Fair. He is survived by his four children, Kevin (Lee) Kempf of Roberts, Arthur (Marilyn) Kempf of River Falls, Darlene VanBeek of Star Prairie and Kay (Gene) Alm of Colesburg, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Naomi (Doug) Dahl of Hudson, Bradley (Jodi) Kempf , Sheldon (Tracey) Kempf and Tammy Kempf, all of River Falls, Jason (Brandy) VanBeek of Osceola, Chad (Nikole) VanBeek of Star Prairie, Kyle Kempf of Roberts, Kerry (Darin) Schlueter of Osceola, Trevor (Angie) Kempf of Hammond, Erik and Brian Alm of Colesburg; and 15 great- grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Ken; a brother, Gilbert; and a sister, Margaret Koehler. The funeral service was 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Cross Lutheran Church in Roberts. Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery in Lake Elmo, Minn., where Bradley Kempf, Doug Dahl, Kyle Kempf, Trevor Kempf, Jason VanBeek and Chad VanBeek served as casketbearers.
