He was born June 20, 1931 to Wesley and Nora Sandmann in Morgan, Minn. He moved to Wisconsin at age four and attended Reeve School and graduated in New Richmond in 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1951 to July 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He married Phyllis Hughes March 13, 1954 while stationed in Moses Lake, Wash. Shortly after being in the service, he started working for Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay. He was also employed by Minnesota State Parks at Gooseberry and the Superior Hiking Trail. They made their home in Silver Bay, where they raised five children. Jake was a member of the UP Church in Silver Bay. He enjoyed his collection of trains, hunting and spending peaceful and quiet times at the cabin, where they went every week since 1986. Galen “Jake” is preceded in death by parents Wesley and Nora Sandmann and a sister, Gloria (Sandmann) Hansen. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Phyllis; three sons, Jerry (Marlene) of Elk River, Eugene (Shelley) of Tomahawk, and Brian (Dawna) of Silver Bay; two daughters, Kathy (Terry Thompson) of Silver Bay and Mary Lou (Vince Sando) of Silver Bay; 14 grandchildren, Melissa, Cozanne, Kristopher Sandmann, Paul Thompson (Erin), Sara (Jason Betzler), Wesley, Cody Sandmann, Brandon, Cory, Mindy and Carly Sandmann, Earl Nikula, Angela and Amelia Halvorson; four brothers and one sister, Virgil (Ramona), Roseville, Minn., Vivian (Reuben) Kammerer, Casper, Wyo., Hubert (Marilyn), Slayton, Minn., Charles (Ruth), Barron, and Robert (Kathy), Star Prairie. Visitation was at 2:30 p.m. until the 3:30 service, Wednesday, Aug. 27 at United Protestant Church, Silver Bay. Burial was at Sawtooth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Alzheimer’s Fund.
