Mortel, 75 Aug. 12, 1927 - July 22, 2003 Betty J. Mortel, formerly of Emerald, died July 22 at her home in Baldwin. Betty was born Aug. 12, 1927 in Glenwood City to Louis and Jennie (Gillis) Draxler. She graduated from Glenwood City High School. Betty married Bernard Mortel Sept. 25, 1948 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Glenwood City. They farmed for many years and she also worked for Doboy in New Richmond for 25 years, retiring in 1988. She was a life-long member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed playing bridge, working in her flower garden, reading, traveling and boating. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard in 2000, daughter Cheryl Mortel, brother Robert Draxler and sister Donna Donner. Betty is survived by four sons; Jerry (Dianne) Mortel of Clayton, Tom (Renee) Mortel of Emerald, John (Michelle) Mortel of Baldwin, Scott (Becky) Mortel of Baldwin; 12 grandchildren, Jeff Mortel, Matt Mortel, Brad (Emmy) Mortel, Dan (Jennifer) Mortel, Travis Mortel, Rebecca VanDyk, Jeanne Mortel, Sara Mortel, Katie Mortel, Brianna Mortel, Jenna Mortel, McKenna Mortel; six great-grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Blaser, Taylor Mortel, Tristen Mortel, Joshua and Jacob VanDyk; two brothers, Don (Ilene) Draxler of Loveland, Colo., Jack (Lillian) Draxler of Hanford, Cal.; three sisters, Dorothy (Gerald) Mitch of Glenwood City, Joan (John) Hawkins of Rosemount, Minn.; Marjorie (Ed) McQuillen of Fresno, Cal.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 26 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Glenwood City with Fr. William Murphy as celebrant. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serving as organist was Genevieve Jackelen. Music was by the church choir. Serving as pallbearers were the grandchildren.
