Kremer, 81 George Michael Kremer, 81, publisher of the River Falls Journal for 27 years, died Sunday, Aug. 10, at Westshire Village in the town of Westport near Madison. Kremer purchased the Journal in 1957 and served as editor and publisher until he sold the newspaper in 1984. Previously, he published the Osakis (Minn.) Review for seven years before moving to River Falls. He was active in civic and church affairs, including terms on the River Falls Hospital and United Hospital boards of directors, the River Falls School Board, the Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Development Board and St. Bridget’s building committee. He was a longtime member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, serving as an usher for 25 years and a member of the building committee. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge and Knights of Columbus. He was born April 1, 1922, in Eden Valley, Minn., the oldest child of Nicholas J. and Edwina (Froehle) Kremer, and grew up in Osakis, Minn. He graduated in 1940 from St. John’s University College Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minn., and that fall he entered the University of Minnesota. After enlisting in the Army in 1942 during World War II, he landed in Normandy, France, with Patton’s Third Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to the University of Minnesota, where he received his degree. On Nov. 23, 1950, he was married to Lorraine Holt. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; nine children and their families: Ann (Larry) Phelps and their children, Matthew and Douglas of Pueblo, Colo.; Joan Kremer and her children, Joshua and Erin Bennett of River Falls; Mark Kremer of Red Wing; Paul (Debby) Kremer and their children, Zachary and Meredith of DeForest; David (Pat) Kremer and their children, Jason and Adam, Christopher Moelter and Shannon (Tommy) Starck of Chippewa Falls; Ruth (Randall) Pickering and their children, Richard, Rachel and Ryan of Fitchburg; Sara (Bill) Larsen and their children, Jill, Kimberly and Kelly of Waterford; Margaret (Steve) Brunn and their children, Kyle and Lora of Franklin; and Michael (Sheryl) Kremer and their children, Nicholas and Collin, Joseph Hallo and Tiffany Bell of Eau Claire; and a step-great-grandson; Also surviving are a brother, William (Joanna) of Wheaton, Minn.; two sisters, Rose (Lowell) Johnson of Albertville, Minn., and Helen (Pat) McLain of Osakis, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Fran Kremer, Eloise Anderson and Shirly Holt and a brother-in-law, Marvin (Wanda) Holt. David A. Holt of Hudson is a cousin of Lorraine (Holt) Kremer, widow of George Kremer. One daughter, Kathleen, died at the age of 15 in 1977 in a swimming accident in California. Also preceding him in death were his parents; two small grandchildren, Christopher Larsen and Emily Kremer; and a brother, Robert. After selling his newspaper in 1984, he and his wife spent summers in River Falls and winter months in Mesa, Ariz. However, since 1998, they have lived at Westshire Village in the town of Westport, Wis., to be close to many of their children and grandchildren. Visitation was at the Ryan Funeral Home in Madison from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13. Funeral Mass will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in River Falls. Visitation will be at the church starting at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
