She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Hudson, the daughter of Eric C. and Ann (Heggen) Petersen, and attended Hudson schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1932. She attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She loved music and was an accomplished violinist. She and her sister, Donna Petersen, a talented pianist, played at many special events in the Hudson area. Miriam Petersen went on to become concert mistress of the University of Minnesota orchestra as well as the Minneapolis Symphony. On June 24, 1939, in Hudson, she was married to Chester Oliver Hylland. She and her husband traveled to many exciting places during his tenure with the federal government. They lived in Alaska, Japan and Hawaii before retiring in 1977 in Bothell to be close to their family. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Cheri) Hylland of Everett, Wash., and Richard Hylland of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandchildren, Amy (Hylland) Beeman, Jeff Hylland and Emily Hylland; and a sister, Donna W. Petersen of Hudson. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband, Chester Hylland, in 1992, and a brother, David Kenwood Petersen, in 1988. Graveside services will be at a later date with burial at Williamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
