Evelyn Steele, 91 M. Evelyn "Ev" Steele, 91, of Mahtomedi, Minn., formerly of Hudson, died Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Greeley Healthcare Center in Stillwater. She was born in Northwood, Iowa, Aug. 28, 1911, the daughter of Ole H. and Anna Marie (Nystuen) Huus, and graduated in 1929 from Northwood High School, where she attended one year of post-graduate study in shorthand and typing. In May 1934, she graduated from Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, where she received her registered nurse designation. On Nov. 14, in her parent's home in Northwood, she was married to Merle Clifford Steele. The lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis from 1936 to 1947, when they moved to Hudson. While in Hudson they operated the Western Auto Supply store at 424 Second St. from January 1948 to June 1975, when they retired and sold the business. After the death of her husband in 1976, she moved to Northwood, Iowa, where she was a member of the First Lutheran Church. In May 1996 she moved to Briarcliff Manor in Mahtomedi to be closer to immediate family. In Mahtomedi she was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage, doing needlepoint, bird watching and baking. She was a gifted and caring nurse and for 23 years did active duty as a registered nurse at Hudson Memorial Hospital from its initial opening in 1952 until her retirement in 1975. Besides her husband, Merle, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest L. Huus, and five sisters, Olga M. Huus, Cora A. Petersen, Palma J. "Polly" Christiansen, Inga Swensrud and Hannah Watkins. Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. (Joanne) Steele of La Crosse and Robert B. Steele of Reading, Pa.; a daughter, Janet (Terrence) Jones of Stillwater; four grandchildren, Dr. Jeff (Julie) Steele of Edina, Minn., Carolyn (Steve) Husten of Stillwater, Paul (Erin) Jones of Annapolis, Md., and Amy Jones of Stillwater; and three great-grandchildren, Collin and Susanna Steele, both of Edina, and Zachary Husten of Stillwater. Services were Monday, Dec. 23, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi with the Rev. John Keller officiating. A private burial occurred the same day at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
