McKenzie, 84, died Sept. 16, 2002 Helen Dorothy McKenzie, 84, a lifelong resident of Hudson, died Monday, Sept. 16, at Hudson Hospital, where she had been a patient for a week. She was born in Hudson March 12, 1918, the daughter of Andrew and Gertrude "Gertie" (Christenson) Flattum. She attended kindergarten (with Norma Goldberg as teacher) in the old high school, corner of Fourth and Oak streets that was razed in 1924. She became a grade school student in the first classes to use the Fourth Street Elementary School, which is scheduled for demolition. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1936. After completing high school, she took a position with St. Croix County working in the office of Register of Deeds Gertrude Anderson (later Mrs. Philip Swasey). Later she took employment in the office of Erickson's Department store in downtown Hudson. On Aug. 20, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, she was married to Alton Alfred "Mac" McKenzie, a Hudson grocer. For many years, until 1974, she and her husband, Mac, and Helen's brother, Christ Flattum, and his wife, Alvina, owned and operated the Quality Food Market at 514 Second St. in downtown Hudson. The business had formerly been O'Connell's Grocery store, a landmark on main street. Surviving are two daughters, Mary H. (Thomas) Olkowski of Solana Beach, Calif., and Maeta L. (Mark) Gherty of Hudson; a stepdaughter, Juanice (Bennie) Newman of Aiken, S.C.; four grandchildren, Molly and Corbin Treacy and Collin and Megan Gherty; two step-grandchildren, Nancy (Wayne) Smith and Ben (Brenda) Newman; three great-grandchildren, Lesley (Keith) Griffin, Todd Smith and Lee Newman; and a sister, Mary R. (Leroy) Jackman of Hudson. Also surviving are four nieces, Marcia (Bill) Edwards, Carla (Richard) Timmerman, Rhonda Jackman and Lois (Dick) Knorr. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Alton McKenzie, in 1975; four brothers, Leon H. Flattum in 1972, Alfred G. Flattum in 1959, Carl L. Flattum in 1992 and Christ Flattum in 1986; and a sister, Gladyce Jasper-Stenberg, in 1980. A memorial service was at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Joanne Sorenson of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson.
