Ward was the owner and publisher of the Hudson Star-Observer, through which she became the driving force for the creation of Hudson Memorial Hospital. Born June 15, 1910, in St. Paul, Minn., to Adele Hennig and Leon Borer, she was raised in the Macalester/Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul during the Great Depression. She taught ballet to fund her education at Ramsey High School. She was married first to Charlie Saunders and started Charlie’s Cafe Exceptionale in Minneapolis. They had one daughter, Charlene. In 1939 she was married to Charles Allen Ward. They had two daughters, Allen “Kiki” and Vida, and a son, Herbert. She was also married for 10 years to James Bryant, who is now deceased. Although a lifelong Democrat, she was sent in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on a goodwill mission to Russia, which she chronicled in a book, “Russia Through A Free Woman’s Eyes.” After the death of Charlie Ward in 1959, Yvette became president of Brown & Bigelow Manufacturing Co. in St. Paul. She lived in Phoenix from 1967 until her death and contributed her time and resources to many charitable organizations including the Barrow’s Neurologic Foundation and the Phoenix Art Museum. An active member of the Phoenix Country Club, she could always be found having lunch with her longtime companion and friend, David Wynne. Surviving are her four children, Charlene Saunders (Jimmy) Nederlander of New York City and Phoenix, Allen “Kiki” Ward Platt of southern France and Ireland, Vida Ward (Dejan) Dordevich of Portland, Ore., and Herbert Bigelow (Lori) Ward of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, Sharon Nederlander, Kristina Gustafson, Ward Platt, Micha and Charlie Ward Dordevich, Charlie and Jazz Yvette Ward; and three great-grandchildren, Gunnar and Krisanna Gustafson and Audrey Platt. There are tentative plans for a May memorial service in Hudson. Memorials are preferred to the Hudson Hospital or the Barrow’s Neurologic Foundation. © 2003 Hudson Star-Observer - Reposted by permission http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=129&SectionID=3&SubSectionID=54&S=1
