She is preceded in death by her husband George and her parents, Joseph (Ed) and Clara Smead, and an infant brother and sister. She is survived by her children, Catherine (Michael) Haugen, Chip (Trish) Norman and Karin (Bob) Schuchman; brother-in-law Mark (Patti) Slaughter; six grandchildren; one-great-grandchild; five nieces; many cousins and fiance Rolly Meier. Pat was born March 30, 1936 in Amery. She attended New Richmond schools and graduated in 1954. Pat married George Norman Sept., 15, 1956. She attended UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Pat later completed a master’s degree in reading (1976) and administration (1979) through UW-River Falls. She started her 40-year career in education in Ann Arbor, Mich. while George attended law school. When she returned to New Richmond in 1961 her career in education continued and included working as a classroom teacher, Title I teacher, reading specialist and administrator in the New Richmond school system. In 1989 she became a Title I reading consultant for CESA 11 and retired after 10 years. Pat was a member of many professional organizations including the St. Croix Valley Reading Council, Wisconsin State Reading Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, the International Reading Association and served as president of the Northwestern Wisconsin Education Association. Throughout her career she held many offices and served on many committees. In 1994 she was elected to the New Richmond school board and served for five years. Some of Pat’s other community involvements included the United Way of St. Croix County and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. A visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 at the United Methodist Church in New Richmond. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 with a visitation preceding at 12 noon. The service was conducted by Pastor Alan George with organist Jerri Rang, pianist Dennis Alfveby and soloist Bill Leahy. Honorary pallbearers were Norma Fish, Karen Hall, Marlene Marlett, Cindy Meyers, Marie Peirson, and Polly Simpson. Pallbearers were Bud Anderson, Jim Drill, Michael Early, Lowell Gillette, John Helling, Paul Mack, Ray Meier, Chuck Polfus and Jack Reckord. Pat was interred at the New Richmond Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Healy-Norman Literacy Fund or the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
