Penman, 84 Gordon White Penman, 84, of Hudson, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a Bronze Star medal recipient and a German prisoner of war, died Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Christian Community of Hudson. Three weeks ago he had a leg amputated at United Hospital in St. Paul and had been recuperating at the Christian Community Home in Hudson until his death. He was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Hudson, the son of James R. and Mayme (Christie) Penman, and attended elementary schools and Hudson High School, where he played football and was a boxer. His many hobbies included collecting Indian arrowheads and rocks, scuba diving, hiking, coin and gun collecting. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 8, 1940, before America's entrance in World War II and was a national champion marksman. After war was declared, he was sent overseas to Europe, where he participated in the Battles of the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was originally listed as "missing in action" after the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium on Dec. 18, 1944. Later it was learned he had been captured by the enemy and was a German prisoner of war in Muhlberg, Germany. He was released by American troops in April 1945, returned to the United States and was honorably discharged from the military at Camp McCoy in 1945. His decorations included American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Eastern Theater Ribbons with three Bronze Stars for Valor. He retired from the National Guard after 30 years of service and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In 1989 he was elected commander of the Indianhead Chapter of the Prisoners of War organization. Prior to going into the service, he worked briefly at the North Hudson Omaha Railroad shops and the former United Refrigerator Company in Hudson. After the war he employed at Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul and was a welder at Butler Stainless Steel in Minneapolis until he retired in 1978. On May 6, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson, he was married to Delores Jane Richie, daughter of Dominic and Rose (Dabruzzi) Richie. After his retirement he worked part time for G. Fred Kremer at Dick's Bar as a consultant and in maintenance. In August 1993, he and his wife, Delores, his brother, Robert, and his wife, Charlotte, were grand marshals of the Pepper Fest parade for their many contributions over the years to the annual event. Surviving are eight daughters, Linda (Dennis) Smith of Cedarburg, Julie (Jeff Bentoff) Penman of Milwaukee, Mary (Roman) Tuler of Mukwonago, Cindy Parr of Minneapolis, Heidi (Mike) Jacobson of Spring Valley, Robin Rose, Kim (Chris) Ployhart and Holly (Brian) Marrs, all of Hudson; five sons, Dennis Penman of St. Paul Park, Minn., Gary Penman and Mark Penman, both of Seeley, Terry Penman of Minneapolis and Tim (Jolene) Penman of Hudson. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, Jeff Penman of Juneau, Alaska, Neal Smith of Cedarburg, Jennie Logan and Austin Jacobson, both of Spring Valley, Robert and Richard Tuler, both of East Troy, Dawn (Brian) Wade, Travis Rose, Cary Lamberta, Brett and Matt Parr, Marissa Cincoski, Heather and Holly Penman, Summer and Savanna Quinn, and Seth Marrs, all of Hudson; three great-grandchildren, Kayla and Nadia Lamberta and Nolan Wade, all of Hudson. Other survivors include six sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Adelbert) Penman, Charlotte (Robert) Penman, both of Hudson, Phyllis Hagen of St. Paul, Peggy Sirianni of Menomonee Falls, Katie Caliguire of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Evelyn (Glenn) Larson of Hudson. Preceding him in death in death were his wife, Delores Jane Penman, in 2001; two sons, Thomas George in 1994 and Jeffrey Kevin in 1963; two brothers, Adelbert Penman in 1988 and Robert Penman in 2000; a sister, Charlotte Ann Penman, in 1987; two sisters-in-law, Louise Reisinger Lubich and Carmelle Richie; and a brother-in-law, George Richie. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m, Monday, Nov. 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Organist Elsie Sandquist accompanied the Hope Choir. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Hudson, where his sons were casketbearers. Honoring his dedication to our country, the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2115, paid tribute with full military honors. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.
