Cameron, 74 Lyle J. Cameron, 74, of North Hudson died at home of cancer Saturday, Jan. 11. Born Jan. 19, 1928, in North Hudson, the son of William and Katherine (Cunningham) Cameron, he received his elementary education at St. Patrick’s and graduated from Hudson High School in the class of 1947. His education was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Navy on Feb. 7, 1945, serving on the USS Wasp aircraft carrier in the Pacific. In July 1946 he was honorably discharged but served an additional duty with the Army National Guard beginning in 1955. On Sept. 27, 1947, he was married to Mary Rose Francis “Sis” Jesse at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Stillwater. He apprenticed as a blacksmith at the North Hudson car shops, became an electrician and owned Lyle’s Bar, now the Mallalieu Inn, in North Hudson. In December 1964 he entered treatment for alcoholism at the renowned Hazelden Foundation in Center City, Minn. He became a counselor and began a distinguished career in the field of chemical dependency. He worked at Hazelden, was founder and director of Wynot Treatment Center in Weyerhaeuser, director of alcohol and drug treatment services for St. Croix County and most recently was director of the Edgewood Program at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., retiring in May 1991. While retired he continued to serve as a role model for others and maintained a network of contacts ready to assist anyone who needed help. In 1991 he received the Community Service Award from the National Council on Alcoholism. In September 2000, he was named one of Hudson High School’s most distinguished alumni with a plaque on the school Wall of Fame recognizing his contributions to the community. His hobbies included fishing, deer hunting, golfing and playing cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, especially making doll houses. Preceding him in death were four brothers, Richard, Kenneth, Donald and Robert. Surviving are his wife, Sis; three children, William (fiance Helen Del Rosario) Cameron of Seattle, Wash., Colleen Cameron of St. Louis, Mo., and Mike Cameron of North Hudson; two sisters, Betty (Jerry) Kukuska of Bayport, Minn., and Mary (George) Hoel of Hudson; a brother, John (Mary) Cameron of West Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 14, 4-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:45, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with the Rev. Peter Szleszinski officiating. At the service, music was provided by the Hope Choir. Burial with full military honors provided by the Hudson VFW was in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Spence “Sandy” Porter, David Evenson, Richard Prescott, William Cunningham, Gene Shefland and George Solsvig. Memorials are preferred to Lakeview Hospice, 927 W.
